Austin Weiss qualified for states in the 110-meter hurdles in 2013, even after false starting in the event in last year's Colonial League track and field meet.

Qualifying for the state tournament for the senior this year is still to be determined, but his postseason is already off to a clean start as the senior finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.66 at last week's league meet held at the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School.

"I just wanted to run a clean race," Weiss said. "I didn't want to false start. It is great to see all the hard work of this season starting to pay off."

Weiss also got the boys 4x100 meter relay team off to a terrific start as he is the first leg on a squad that includes Cole Miller, Harry Hall and Cam Richardson. The group took gold and set a meet record with a time of 43.45 .

The last leg of that relay squad, Richardson, had quite the successful meet individually. The three-sport junior took two more gold medals, one in the 100-meter dash and the other from the 200. His time of 22.54 in the finals for the 200 earned him the gold, but his time of 22.21 in the preliminaries on Tuesday, day one of the two-day meet, set a meet record.

Richardson didn't know the record was official until much later.

"I found out on day one that my time was good enough, but we weren't sure if it had to be run in the finals or if you could run it in prelims," he said. "I found out [Wednesday] around noon, that it actually did count. It was definitely an accomplishment that I am proud of."

Cole Miller, the second leg of the record-setting 4x100 relay squad also made a few solo trips to the medal stand last week. The senior earned two bronze medals, one in pole vault and the other in the 100-meter dash.

Alec Fixl finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Ryan Cerrone earned bronze in the 800-meter run, and Alex Partington took gold in shot put with a throw of 47-8.5. He also slipped on a silver medal after discus.

Northwestern's boys 1600-meter relay team of Cerrone, Fixl, Jay Hereba and Richardson finished first with a time of 3:31.05.

Hereba, who returned to track this season after taking last year off, earned a gold medal in the 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 50.80. He also earned silver in the 200-meter dash.

The senior is loving his success, and the team's success, in his farewell season at Northwestern.

"There is no better feeling than to be able to work and compete with the kids that you go to school with and be around day in and day out," said Hereba. "It is a thrill to be able to go and share that success with them both, personal and collective success. Having both the girls and boys squads win the regular season championships has never been done before. We are leaving our mark."

As a squad, the Northwestern boys' team finished second in team points with 129.5. Palmerton won the league meet title with 140.
