Track teams compete at leagues

Kelly Gonoude was seeded fourth heading in the girls' 1600-meter run at last week's Colonial League track and field meet at the Zephyr Sports Complex in Whitehall.

The junior wanted to better her seed and sneak into the top three of the event, which she did by running a new personal best of 5:20.23, and finishing third.

Now she wants to do it again at districts.

"Last year I got fourth in the district, so this year I want to get to third or second if possible, now that getting a medal here gives me more confidence going to districts," she said.

Her fraternal twin, Kyle, also basked in the success at the league meet last Tuesday and Wednesday as he earned two gold medals, from the 1600 and the 3200 meter runs.

Kyle Gonoude said he had to change his style in the 3200 this year.

"I normally like to sit behind people in the 3200-meter run, but I couldn't do that this year because there wasn't extremely tough competition in the league this year," said Kyle Gonoude. "It forced me to find my own way on the track and a new approach while running."

Fellow Falcon Lindsay Bauer has her own approach to her different events, a mindset that is definitely successful as the sophomore took home four medals and set a new school record from last week's meet. (see story on Page 9)

Salisbury senior Austin Uhl also took home multiple medals. He placed second in long jump at 20 feet, 11 inches and fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-10.

Uhl wanted more than 5-10. He called it "a bad day," but still stayed positive.

"I'm happy to have this medal," said Uhl. "I wanted to get to 6-1, 6-2, but for my first year, I'm happy to be here and happy to be going on."

Holly Szita has over a year of track and field experience and she has two more years left in her high school career, but the sophomore is making an impact now. She stood atop the medal stand after high jumping 5-2, tying her personal best.

"Winning here is definitely a confidence booster," Szita said. "I'm going to move on and build off of it because next week [at districts] it is not going to be as easy to get gold. So this is big."

Three of Szita's classmates also had high finishes at the league meet. Kaitlyn Toman took third in girls' long jump. Makenzie Groff snagged second in pole vault at nine feet and Maddy Undercuffler finished fourth in discus with a toss of 91-06.

Salisbury's youthful girls' track team shows a lot of promise for the future. The earned them a third-place finish in the team scores with 86 points at leagues. Northwestern took the girls title with 148.5 points.
