LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Tiger track teams secure league titles

Heading into their toughest meet of the season, a tri-meet that included an undefeated Southern Lehigh team, the Northwestern girls' track and field athletes reminded themselves of the number 18 all week.

That number was symbolic of the Lady Tigers' consecutive victories, a streak that began in 2013 when they went a perfect 11-0 in the Colonial League.

The Lady Tigers added numbers 19 and 20 to that list last week before finishing off their undefeated season Tuesday at Salisbry.

During Thursday's tri-meet at Southern Lehigh High School, the Lady Tigers defeated Southern Lehigh (87-73) and Bangor (116-34) to keep Northwestern perfect at 9-0.

"We knew this was our biggest meet of the year," Trista Cunningham said, "and same with the guys. We really all came into this meet with the mentality that we really need to focus, work hard, and get done what we needed to get done."

The nine wins to begin the season have the Lady Tigers in control of another Colonial League championship. That was their goal at the beginning of the season, and wins against Pen Argyl and Salisbury during next week's tri-meet will give them that coveted undefeated season.

Haley Yost, who normally doesn't run the four events she did on Tuesday, had first-place finishes in all of her races.

Yost ran the 800-meter run in 2:28.4, the 1600 -meter run in 5:33.7 and the 3200-meter run in 11:52.2. She also helped the girls' 4x800 relay team secure first with a time of 10:31.3. Those times may not have been season-bests, but she continues to do whatever it takes to make this team as successful as possible.

"I just did what I had to to win each one," Yost said. "I didn't kill myself in any of them really. I tried to save myself for the next event and just kind of kept focusing on one event at a time."

Dave Kerschner, head coach of the girls' side, knew the importance of topping the Lady Spartans. That helped sway his decision to use Yost to pull away from the Lady Spartans in the distance events.

"Probably early to the middle stages, it looked like they were going to give us a run and thought we were going to be in a dog fight," Kerschner said. "But then our distance people really closed out the meet."

Trista Cunningham continues to put up high marks in her events, particularly in the discus. She set a personal best on Thursday with a mark of 111-10 in the discus. She also finished first in the long jump (16-1 [1/2]) and triple jump (32-2 [1/2]), while placing third in the shot put (32-0 [3/4]).

"That was a big part of my day," Cunningham said. "I was really, really excited to do that because I was worried about the wind, and my previous meet wasn't too good."

The boys' side also kept its perfect season alive with victories over Southern Lehigh (118.5-31.5) and Bangor (99-51). The Tigers and Spartans both entered the meet with identical 7-0 marks, but Northwestern's depth was a deciding factor.

"I did think it was going to be a closer meet than this," boys' head coach Tim Cunningham said. "And we started walking away with some points in the two-mile and then the high jump. Then it started really taking off in our favor."

Cam Richardson broke his season personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.3, four-tenths of a second faster this his previous mark. To go along with that, he tied his season best time in the 100 meter dash (10.9) and anchored the 4x100 meter relay team's victory.

"It definitely feels nice running better times consistently, which is a good thing," Richardson said. "I'm looking forward to improving and looking to get good times in leagues and districts against very good competition."

While many of the Tigers' regular top performers had solid days, there were also a number of pleasant surprises that had impressed Cunningham.

One of those was Alec Fixl, who used a 41.9-second finish in the 300 meter hurdles to capture first place and add to the Tigers' point total.

"Him and [Austin] Weiss are very good at the 300 hurdles," Cunningham said. "And a lot of times he [Fixl] falls in like third place or fourth place and just misses. Today, he had a heck of a run."
