Strong Storm cools off Rough Rider rally
Northwestern pitcher Jordan Storm was put in a high-pressure situation during last week's Colonial League North Division tilt against Catasauqua.
The Rough Riders had jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third, were looking for some more offense.
But Storm, who relieved Brandon Eden after 2 1/3 innings, came in calm and collected. He put together the most important stretch of the game that sparked the Tigers both offensively and defensively.
Storm struck out the two batters he faced in the third, keeping the Rough Riders' (6-6 in Colonial League) lead at 5-0. The next inning, the Tigers (8-5 in Colonial League) scored five runs to tie it up and added one more in the fifth to secure the victory on Friday at Sheckler Elementary School.
"My mindset was the game is never over until the last out is made," Storm said. "It was only the third inning and we were only down by five. Five is a big number on the scoreboard, but it's nothing in your head. It's all mental and there's nothing else about it."
The win put the Tigers in prime position for a Colonial League playoff spot. They hold the North Division's top spot (a half game above second-place Pen Argyl) with three league games left.
"We hit a little tough spot at the beginning of the year," Storm said. "It's pretty hard because we didn't even play on the field at first; we only got on like two times before the season. We are coming out and looking pretty good right now, so I'm excited."
Josh Williamson was hit by a pitch to start the fourth inning, a play that sparked the rest of the offense. After Nick Rodriguez flied out to center field, the next three Tigers reached base. Williamson came home on a Rough Rider throwing error, and Jake Augustus and Austin Yanek both recorded RBI-hits that made it a 5-3 game.
Three batters later, Taylor Breininger stepped to the plate and brought two runs home with his double to deep left field to make it a 5-5 game.
"I saw his tendencies," Breininger said. "He was throwing a lot of first-pitch fastballs. He had a lot of off-speed pitches. I knew if I was going to get that pitch that I couldn't just watch that go by."
Augustus came up big in the next frame as well, recording a RBI-single that scored Williamson to ultimately decide the game.
"It shows that we never quit," Breininger said. "We started off kind of slow, and we knew we can't just go out there and expect teams to give up."
Storm earned the win after allowing just four hits and striking out four in 4 2/3 innings.
The Rough Riders saw their first five batters reach base, which resulted in three first-inning runs. In the third inning, they added two more on a run by Randal Pacchioli and a RBI-double from Joe Rothrock.
"This was huge," Breininger said. "We knew battling for the North Division that we needed this win. To come out come out with a win was huge."
