SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT
An agreement was approved with the American Red Cross to use Harry S Truman Elementary School and Salisbury High School as emergency shelters during a disaster at the April 23 school board meeting. The American Red Cross will work with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management System on disasters. If a disaster is activated, residents will be alerted through WFMZ. The American Red Cross said they will bring in powerful standby generators to these schools if needed.
The board also approved Miller Flooring Company to install a Mondo Advanced Rubber Floor with an Everylay Layer and pole standards for a total cost of $150,610 in the old gymnasium at SHS. The cost to the district will be $36,110 from the Capital Projects Fund and the insurance will cover the balance.
The board approved the maintenance department tracking system from eWorkOrder.com with an annual cost of $3,600.
Also approved with the proposal from Stanley Convergent Security Solutions for additional security for the administration building at a cost of $5,600.
In personnel news, the board accepted the resignation, due to retirement, of Carol A. Klinger as a sixth grade teacher at Salisbury Middle School effective on the last day of the 2013-2014 school year.
Elsie Skoutelas will also retire as a part-time cafeteria worker at Salisbury Middle School effective on the last day of the 2013-2014 school year.
Janice Saltsman, part-time instructional assistant at HST will also retire effective June 30, 2014.
School psychologist Erin Moeser at SMS and SHS was approved for a general leave of absence without pay and/or benefits at the start of the 2014-2015 school year until one week prior of the start of the second semester of the 2014-2015 school year.
Pamela Marth, a full-time secretary at Western Salisbury Elementary School resigned to accept a job as a part-time instructional assistant effective at a date to be determined.
Lisa Dupre was approved, pending completion of requirements as a part-time one-to-one instructional assistant at SMS effective May 2.
John Gilligan was approved, pending completion of requirements, as a middle school softball coach for the 2013-2014 school term without pay and/or benefits.
The board had a final reading and then approved Policy 202, eligibility of non-resident students.
Board member Mary Ziegler was approved as a board representative to the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 board effective July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2017.
Resident Norma A. Cusick provided a report on the Allentown Public Library. Preparations are underway for the summer reading program. QNB Bank is sponsoring the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and will donate money to the library for every double hit by IronPigs players during the season's home games.
Cusick also reported 4,012 Salisbury residents have library cards.
Secretary of the Board Robert Bruschak reminded residents a full budget presentation will be held 7 p.m. May 5 in the administration building. The public is encouraged to attend.
SHS Assistant Principal Bill Dovico reported staff is proctoring AP testing and Keystone tests - a total of 424 exams.
SMS Assistant Principal Ken Parliman reported PSSA assessments in writing, math and reading have been administered and the eighth grade students will take the PSSA science assessment.
WSE Principal Grace Hartman said the students will be completing the PSSA assessments at the elementary level.
Hartman also expressed her gratitude to the SHS No Place for Hate students who came to WSE to spend the day with the students.
"They were eloquent, mature; they were just wonderful," Hartman said. "We should be really proud of our high schoolers."
Assistant Superintendent Randy Ziegenfuss said the last TL2014 survey is out and asked for parents, teachers and students to complete the survey. Ziegenfuss also said social media week is May 5 to 9 in conjunction with staff appreciation week.
