Heydt, Yurconic reach D-11 quarterfinals

After an 11-4 season, it wasn't surprising that Salisbury had three players in the District 11 singles tournament. Freshman John Yurconic came into the tournament as the number five seed, while junior Ben Heydt was seeded seventh. Freshman Mason Groff was unseeded, but was in the tournament as a draw, losing a tough first-round match to Moravian Academy's Adam Kramer, the tournament's number six seed, by scores of 6-3, 6-4.

Yurconic and Heydt both moved on to the quarterfinals, with both Yurconic and Heydt also drew Moravian Academy players. Yurconic went up against fourth-seeded Madhav Sekar and Heydt faced second seed Zach Shaff.

Both Falcons players battled, but both came out on the wrong end of the scores. Moravian Academy had two of the four players competing in the semi-finals, with Shaff advancing to the finals, where he will face Northwestern Lehigh's Henry Paiste, the tournament's top seed and defending champion.

"I played very hard," said Heydt. "I played each point 100 percent and was just playing against a really good player like Zach Shaff, who's a really experienced player and that's always tough."

The infusion of youth has been a big storyline for Salisbury throughout the regular season and is going to remain so in the postseason, with the doubles and team championships still to come.

"The season has gone very well," said Heydt after his match with Shaff. "The team is doing a lot better than last year with the new, upcoming freshmen, John Yurconic and Mason Groff. They really helped our team with the singles and were able to help pull out some good team wins."

The district doubles tournament was scheduled to begin Wednesday at Parkland High School, with the district team tournament to be played next week.

Yurconic and Heydt will team up for Salisbury in the doubles tournament and could be a formidable pairing not just this season, but next season as well, since both will be back next season for Salisbury tennis.

"I think having John Yurconic on the backhand side and me on the forehand side, it's going to turn out to be a pretty good tournament for us, because I know John's very experienced and we're going to make it far, I believe," said Heydt, who is looking forward to not just the doubles, but the team tournament before wrapping up his junior year.

Doubles seeds were released Monday night. Yurconic and Heydt will team up as the No. 3 seed, while teammates John Bonge and Brendan Reichenbach, who formed the Falcons' top doubles team during teh season, will play as teh No. 7 seed.

Salisbury's Aaron King and Eric Young made it into the district doubles tournament as an unseeded pairing.
