WHS student receives Eisenhower Award

Abbigail K. Woodring was named the 2014 student recipient of the Dwght D. Eisenhower Award by the West Point Society of the Lehigh Valley.

Mike Tauber, representing the society, in his remarks, said Woodring possesses the values, leadership and character Eisenhower embraced.

Tauber presented Abbigail with a book on Eisenhower, a World War II general whose leadership was key in victory battles and later became the country's president

Woodring's name plate as an honoree is on a plaque, added to the honor roll of previous recipients. She is the sixth annual student whose name is on the prestigious plaque.

She said she is honored to have her name included with the previous student recipients.

Richard LaDuke, program chairman and high school counselor, said the plaque has a special location inside the main entrance to Whitehall High School.

"Abbigail is a model for the whole high school," Principal Chris Schiffert said of what Woodring brings to the classroom, extra-curricular activities and her volunteer service.

"Surprised, really, really," Woodring said of her selection as the Eisenhower Award recipient.

"Abbigail was deemed worthy of this award by both counseling and administration," LaDuke stated. Woodring's parents, Dave and Karen Woodring attended the ceremony honoring their daughter.

The 17-year-old junior carries a 4.483 grade-point average, but it is her involvement in clubs and volunteer organizations which are noteworthy.

She is active with student council, student forum, positive steps, the outdoors, London and art clubs, cross country, soccer and track. She has volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital, an animal shelter and is a certified soccer referee.

"Abbi is a leader in every sense of the word, and she has served as an orientation guide for the counseling department," LaDuke said.

Looking to the future, Woodring will study in college for a possible career in the health field or biochemistry. She will be participating in Emerging Health program next year through Penn State University.
