LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Cougar Column

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching as LVCHS students anticipate summer break.

As the weather warms up, we were able to hold our first Shorts Day, as a reward for the students who went the entire first semester without a single discipline or dress code violation, with 44% of the student body qualifying.

This past Wednesday and Thursday our ninth and twelfth graders participated in TerraNova testing. The school administers these every year to make sure the school is providing a quality education. Our students also take the National Spanish Exam to demonstrate how much knowledge they have acquired.

We also had six LVCHS students attend the Biology Olympics at Cedar Crest College to compete individually and as a team.

Even though we lost some holiday time due to the harsh winter, we were still able to have Good Friday and Monday off for Easter. We also ended school on Thursday with our annual Easter Chapel, led by our praise team, in which we focused on the beautiful Gospel message of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Our sports teams have been hugely affected by the crazy spring weather. Many games and meets have been canceled or rescheduled. Yet, our teams continue to show that a small Christian school can be a force to be reckoned with.

Weather permitting, we will have home baseball games this coming Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. The girls soccer club also has a home game on Tuesday and the track team will be competing at Catasauqua High School Thursday, May 1, which is also the National Day of Prayer.

Our school also performed "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" April 11 and 12. Students did an outstanding job. A short video and slideshow of their performance can be seen on lehighvalleylive.com.

May 3 is the LVCHS Spring Choir concert at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Catasauqua. The concert begins 7 p.m. and admission is free. The winners of the Donna Parris Memorial Music Scholarship ($2,500) will be announced that evening. The choir is also going to see a performance of Music Man at DeSalles next week, after which they will do a performance tour to our sending schools.

The most exciting part of this quarter has most definitely been the return of Jader Restrepo, a student who has been unable to come to school since Christmas because of a brain tumor. Thankfully, he has healed with surgery and treatment and a lot of prayer from our students and faculty. We love you Jader and welcome back!

LVCHS is already accepting applications for the coming school year. Last week we had 42 seventh- and eighth-grade students in the building from Bethlehem Christian School to give them a brief snapshot of what life in high school is like.

Another newsworthy student is Josh Brennan, who is this year's recipient of the Donley Award for Excellence. He is also the class co-salutatorian, along with Mercy Jacobs. Carissa Clift is the class valedictorian.

Our National Honor Society induction has been postponed due to a conflict with the 40th anniversary celebration of Lehigh Christian Academy.

***

The end of the year also signals elections for the next year's student council and class officers. The student council elections will be held May 8. That week is also Teacher Appreciation Week, and the beginning of AP Exams at LVCHS.

Our Class of 2014 graduation (25th ceremony) will be held June 6 at Cedar Crest Bible Fellowship Church.
