Tourney to raise scholarship funds for SHS athletes

Area golf enthusiasts will have an opportunity May 10 to enjoy their sport and at the same time provide college scholarship funds for Salisbury High School athletes.

On May 10, the Frank Yelinko Memorial Fund will host its 15th annual golf tournament at Allentown Municipal Golf Course to raise money for the Frank Yelinko Scholarship Fund at SHS.

Frank Yelinko, a teacher and coach for 35 years in the Salisbury School District, died from cancer in February, 2000. The scholarship fund provides one male and one female athlete with a $1,000 scholarship per year for up to four years.

"Over the years, we have had the opportunity to provide these scholarships to exemplary Salisbury High School students to continue their education at select college and universities throughout the United States," Don Kelly, a tournament organizer, said.

Kelly said the tournament was first organized in 2000 and has raised $115,500 for the scholarship fund as well as donated $25,000 to the Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley.

Currently a group of 12 volunteers, including Frank's widow Liz, help organize the event each year, Kelly said.

Yelinko lived in Emmaus and was known in that community as well, Kelly said.

Those wishing to support the Memorial Fund by playing golf can contact Kelly at 484-714-8045 for information. There is a cost for the event which will begin 8 a.m. May 10 at Allentown Municipal Golf Course, with a shotgun start.

Kelly said there are other ways of supporting the fund, such as sponsoring a hole. A sign with a company logo or personal message will be placed on a hole for the nearly 150 golfers expected to play.
