Three Falcons to play in D-11 tennis singles
There's still some regular season tennis left to be played-three matches to be exact. But there are already some postseason aspirations for the Salisbury boys' tennis team.
On Monday night, head coach Rob Benson found out where all three of his singles players would be seeded in the upcoming District 11 Class AA Boys Singles Tournament on Wednesday at Parkland High School.
No. 1 singles player John Yurconic, No. 2 singles Ben Heydt and No. 3 singles Mason Groff will all have at least one match on Wednesday.
While it may be a bit of a surprise to the players, Benson expected this for much of the season after seeing his team put together a 9-4 mark in the Colonial League as of Monday.
"I was planning for that all the way," Benson said. "They kids may be a little more surprised than I am, but I thought they had chance to get to districts."
Yurconic (11-3) will be the tournament's No. 5 seed, facing Blue Mountain's Adam Pace to get things started. Should he win, he'll advance to play the winner of Central Catholic's Trevor Grigoruk and Palmerton's Richard Rosselli later in the day.
Heydt (9-5) is the No. 7 seed and will square off against Palmerton's Miguel Abalos. The winner of that match will face the winner of Bethlehem Catholic's Niko Franekic and Lehighton's Tegan Durishin in the second round.
Benson expects both to advance at least to the second day of the tournament.
"It looks like we got two that could get to at least the quarterfinals," Benson said. "That's what I'm hoping."
Groff (11-2) also has a chance at making some noise come districts. He'll take on No. 6 seed Adam Kramer of Moravian Academy in the first round. The winner will advance to play either Wilson's Scott Marceca or Central Catholic's Gabe Velez.
"I expect Mason to put up a good fight and possibly pull a big upset," Benson said.
Much of the Falcons' success, not only in this district singles tournament, but to close out the season, will depend on their mental toughness. Benson has seen considerable strides since their opening match, but believes there is room for improvement.
"It's just a matter of getting mentally tough," Benson said. "Once they got a little bit tougher mentally, it was great.
"They still have a little bit to go, but they're really playing like linebackers. I like what they're doing."
Results from Tuesday's match against Palisades (4-8 in Colonial League) were not available at time of press. A win against the Pirates would qualify the Falcons for the four-team Colonial League playoffs. The semifinals will be held next Tuesday (April 29) with the finals two days later, both at The Winning Touch in Allentown.
The Falcons will also have two nonleague games to close out the season, against Central Catholic and Hamburg. The Hamburg match is still up in the air because of the weather.
