Softball downs Dieruff in five

Prior to last week's nonleague game against Dieruff, the Salisbury softball team had failed to win back-to-back games all season long.

The Lady Falcons, who have alternated wins and losses the entire season, entered their matchup against the Huskies with a .500 record.

But that changed last Thursday.

Due in large part to five Huskie errors in the fourth inning, the Lady Falcons (6-6 overall; 5-5 in Colonial League) scored six of their runs en route to an 11-1 victory at Salisbury Middle School. It was Salisbury's second straight win after edging Palmerton on Wednesday, 3-2.

"They picked up that fact very acutely that this was the first time we've won two in a row," head coach Ken Choquette said. "It's great to have back-to-back wins. It's so important for these young players to play with confidence. That just gives them something positive to work off of."

During that potent fourth inning, the entire Lady Falcons' lineup came up to bat in producing six runs.

After Courtney Goletz reached base on a dropped third strike, Jenna Keet connected on her second hit of the game, a single to left field. The next four batters-Thalya Creswell, Kelly Garrigan, Meghan Williams and Rachel Costantini-all reached base on Huskie infield errors. All went on to score, making it a 10-1 game after four innings.

"I love hitting," Keet said. "I've been in kind of a slump, but it's coming back."

"What I liked about it is that we had good, aggressive base-running," Choquette said. "They had their heads up, and they were seeing the opportunities and trying to take advantage of the errors."

Abby Garrigan reached based on a fielder's choice in the fifth; she later came around to score on a Dieruff throwing error after Creswell singled to left field, putting into effect the 10-run rule.

"I'm really happy with the team," Keet said. "We've come together and we're kind of like sisters I guess you could say. We click really good this year."

Brooke Rogers, who picked up the win on the mound, had an RBI-double in the second to tie it 1-1 after the Huskies scored first. Rogers allowed just two hits on the day and struck out three batters.

"The defense has been extremely solid all year long," Choquette said. "The pitching has been good; we haven't been walking a lot of players. Defensively and pitching-wise, we're doing excellent. I think their bats are beginning to get a little bit more aggressive on the strikes."

Keet opened up the third inning with a deep shot to right field and reached base on a Huskie error. She proceeded to advance all the way home after another throwing error that put the Falcons ahead 2-1. Kelly Garrigan and Costantini added RBI-singles in the third as well.

The Lady Falcons' winning streak ended at two games after they lost Monday, 4-0 to Southern Lehigh. Results from Tuesday's game at Northern Lehigh were not available at time of press.
