Eckhart updates commissioners on status of controller's office

Lehigh County Controller Glenn Eckhart presented commissioners with the "Office of the Controller's Annual Report for 2013" during the April 9 meeting.

"We try to point out areas of findings where we should look to save money and we're doing a good job," Eckhart told the county board.

Eckhart referred to newly hired accountants and interns retained by the county that have led to decreased costs.

He specifically said the accountants, while receiving a lower salary, remain highly trained and capable.

Eckhart also told commissioners decreased staffing has led to less performance-based audits annually.

"We can't do it with the manpower we have," he stressed.

Commissioner Scott Ott asked why the board of commissioners has not heard from Eckhart more.

"Are you communicating with the board enough?" Ott asked. "Will we only see you if your hair is on fire?"

Also during the meeting, commissioners were presented with a first reading of a bill to change the name of the Lehigh County Prison to Lehigh County Jail.
