SALISBURY ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

"Bird Town" will be a big part of the second annual Earth Fair in Salisbury Township.

"Earth Fair," 10 a.m. to noon April 26, Lindberg Park, is organized by the Salisbury Township Environmental Advisory Council.

The Bird Town banner and road signs are expected to be displayed at Earth Fair, which will feature several workshops.

Bird Town is a partnership of The Audubon Society and municipalities, including Salisbury, in Pennsylvania to promote conservation and a healthy, more sustainable environment.

"We're going to try to do more coordination with the Lehigh Valley Bird Town Coalition," said Kreg Ulery, STEAC chair.

Salisbury Township Director of Planning and Zoning Cynthia Sopka said she's gotten a positive response about "Earth Fair" from the Salisbury Township School District administration. "They're anxious to participate," Sopka said at the March 19 STEAC meeting.

The "Earth Fair" schedule for April 16 is:

10 a.m. - Lehigh County Penn State Extension Master Gardener: Composting;

10:30 a.m. - Lehigh Valley Health Network: Healthy Living;

11 a.m. - Audubon Pennsylvania: Bird Town; and

11:30 a.m. - Waste Management: Recycling

The Lindberg Park Master Site Plan is expected to be displayed.

Sopka said she's working with Salisbury Township Consulting Engineer David J. Tettemer of Keystone Consulting Engineers, Inc. on the planning and design for the municipal building storm- water basin upgrade.

"Keystone Consulting has worked on retrofits before," Sopka said.

"We're going to try to plant all native things and use that as an example," Sopka said.

Tettemer is digitizing the original design of the basin. The work is expected to be done by the township Public Works Department employees.

It was noted a spring native plant sale is to be held May 3, 4, 10 and 11, Unitarian Universalist Church of the Lehigh Valley, 424 Center Street in Bethlehem. There is a free workshop, 9 a.m. May 3, with attendees receiving a free native plant.

The STEAC next meets 7 p.m. April 16, at the Salisbury Township Municipal Building, 2900 S. Pike Avenue.
