Tiger track teams crush Catty
Following Tuesday's Colonial League track and field dual meet against Catasauqua at Northwestern High School, 30 Tiger seniors were recognized after their final home meet.
One of those seniors was Jay Hereba, who participated in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. He entered the meet with the top overall time in the league in the 400 at 53 seconds flat. On Tuesday, he added a first-place finish with a time of 55.9 seconds in the event.
Hereba, who also held the second-best mark in the 200 (23.4 seconds), improved on that mark by two tenths of a second and finished in second place behind Northwestern's Cam Richardson. He took second in the 100 at 11.5 seconds.
"I'm thrilled with how I'm performing right now," Hereba said. "I'm hoping for better. I'm going to keep trying to go for better times and continue to pick up points for the team. And hopefully in the long run we're looking at a league championship and district championship."
Even without participating on the track and field team last year, Hereba has been together one of the more impressive starts not only on the team, but the entire league. He credits soccer for keeping him in shape, as well as intense workouts during the offseason that have brought him to this level.
"I did not participate last year, [but] I participated my sophomore year," Hereba said. "Coming out this year was one of the best decisions I've made. It's a great group of people to work with day in and day out.
"I've had soccer to keep me in shape for one thing. On another note, for the offseason we've been consistently training and doing weight training, sprint training and a lot of speed training."
Despite a year absence on the track, Hereba has lofty goals set for himself going forward. He'd like to drop his 400 time a few seconds and be at the top of the league come the postseason. There's no reason to expect he can't accomplish that.
"I'm shooting for a sub-50 time for the 400," Hereba said. "I'm three seconds off that right now, so hopefully I can get that to come down."
Richardson was the top Colonial League runner in the 100 (10.9 seconds) and 200 (22.7) coming into the meet against Catty, and he earned first-place spots in both. Alex Partington scored first in the shot put (40-10) and discus (137-10), Collin Furchner was first in the 1600 (5:00.0) and 3200 (11:09.0). The Tigers Austin Kobordo broke the league best distance in the javelin at 158-1 to lead the boys' 117-33 victory.
The Lady Tigers earned first place in every event except shot put to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 136-14 victory.
Alexis Gawelko entered Tuesday with the league's top times in the 100 (16.4) and 300 (52.6) hurdles. She earned first place in both of those events against the Rough Riders, as well as the top spot in the high jump at 4-08.
"With the long preseason and the weather, we haven't really had a chance to get out," Gawelko said. "So now just having that chance, I'm just really excited to do well in hurdle."
"She has a lot of potential," Northwestern girls head head coach Tim Cunningham said of Gawelko. "And actually when I look across the board, it's not just her, there's a lot of potential on the girls side and even the guys."
Rounding out the girls' team was Trista Cunningham, who improved on all of her marks in the long jump (16-2), triple jump (32-6) and discus (106-8). She also took second in the shot put at 31-11 1/2. Heading into this week, the top spot in the league in the discus was 105-6 by Bangor's Jasmine Vass.
Sarah Segan took first in two of her individual events (200m and 400m dash) for the Lady Tigers.
The Tigers will have a tri meet with Notre Dame (Green Pond) and Palisades on Thursday. Meet time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Palisades High School.
"I never liked for any of the teams I've ever coached to look beyond the next meet," Cunningham said. "It's one at a time. And if you just focus on the events that you're in, and you focus on trying to get your personal bests, the wins take care of themselves."
