Public a no-show at Tom Muller's town hall meeting

A common saying during the years of the unpopular Vietnam War was, "What if they gave a war and nobody came?"

Well, he didn't give a war but Lehigh County Executive Tom Muller called a town hall meeting and ... no one showed.

The public meeting room of the Lehigh County Government Center was empty for Muller's first town hall meeting March 31.

Accompanied by local media, staff and a few commissioners, Muller waited until 6:30 p.m. for the public to arrive.

When no one walked through the door, Muller decided to conclude the meeting.

Muller said he wants to have a town hall meeting every other month. Times and locations are yet to be determined.

"We have to find another formula to get to the citizens," he said.

County Chief of Staff Frank Kane said issue-based topics tend to bring the community out to meetings.

Muller has attended numerous municipal meetings across the county the past few months.

During his campaign, Muller said he would regularly attend municipal meetings and hold town hall meetings.

"I've tried not to become a formal presence at meetings," Muller said. "I try not to talk. I try to listen."

Muller said he wants to attend his next municipal meeting up north.

"They are the ones who have the least contact with us," he said.
