LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball, softball have busy schedules ahead

The current crop of seniors on the Salisbury baseball team has endured plenty of success over its high school career thus far.

So, the 1-2 start that the Falcons had in the Colonial League this season has been one they're not very familiar with. During the previous two seasons, the Falcons (2-2 overall) lost just three league games. Furthermore, during their 15-1 conference mark last season, the Falcons hadn't lost until early May, their second-to-last league game.

Much of it has to do with the stagnant offense that's been seen at times. The Falcons were shut out in their conference opener against Palisades, 1-0. Then, the following day, Wilson used a 4-2 victory to drop the Falcons to 0-2 in the Colonial League.

But while those two losses certainly hurt-Palisades and Wilson are a combined 2-5 as of Monday-the Falcons bounced back in a big way.

During the final game of three consecutive days with league matchups, Salisbury handed Notre Dame (Green Pond) its first loss of the season with a 10-0 victory. The Crusaders entered the game 4-0, but a shutout victory from pitcher Justin Aungst stopped the Falcons' slide.

The Falcons will play in four consecutive days, starting with Tuesday's game against Saucon Valley. They'll travel to Pen Argyl on Wednesday.

While the baseball team has had some troubles in the batter's box, the same can't be said for the Lady Falcons' softball team.

The Lady Falcons combined to score 30 runs in their two league victories-14 against Palisades and 16 against Notre Dame-to jump out to a 2-1 Colonial League mark (2-2 overall).

"They've been doing a great job gelling as a unit and supporting each other," head coach Ken Choquette said. "I think that is showing at the plate with good, aggressive at bats [and] good smart at-bats.

"They've been very patient at the plate. They're waiting for their pitch. They haven't been swinging at a lot of junk. They're really concentrating and doing real well in the box."

While last season ended with a disappointing 1-15 mark in conference, the Lady Falcons have already doubled that total early on. In Choquette's eyes, his team's smart play has provided confidence in the Lady Falcons' dugout.

"The team as a unit is very happy and very pleased with the results so far," Choquette said. "They're thrilled with being 2-1 in the conference. They know they can do it. They know they can play competitively with any team in this conference.

"When I look at a game, whether they win or lose, I'm looking at how they played that game. Did they play smart ball, did they play aggressive [and] did they do everything to the top of their abilities to try to decrease errors, decrease mistakes and be as aggressive at the plate as possible and aggressive at the base pads."

The Lady Falcons, too, will have their hands full with a busy week ahead. They'll travel to Pen Argyl on Wednesday, host Bangor on Thursday and host Northwestern on Friday. All games are set for 4 p.m.

Results from Tuesday's game against Saucon Valley were not available at time of press.

"Right now, I think the team is very enthusiastic and are looking forward to this year," Choquette said. "It's been tough on them with all of these rainouts. When you start out well, you want to build upon that momentum and continue with a couple of games a week."
