It's recycling time. Start collecting now for the Whitehall Township Environmental Advisory Council's 20th annual recycling contest. Last year 158 students and teachers participated, collecting 35,381 pounds of magazines and phone books, 2,000 pounds of used clothing, 68 pairs of eyeglasses, 107 cell phones and over 400 printer cartridges. Nineteen students became members of the Quarter Ton Club by collecting at least 500 pounds of magazines and telephone books. These recycling efforts saved approximately 46 trees.

The contest is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade who attend schools in the Whitehall-Coplay area. It is held each spring in conjunction with Earth Day. It's fun, and you can win great prizes while you help to keep America beautiful. So start saving magazines and telephone books now. Additionally, we will again be accepting clean, used clothing, prescription eyewear, cellphones and used inkjet and laser printer cartridges. A new item this year will be hearing aids.

They do not accept newspapers or batteries.

The local recycling center is located at the corner of Eberhart and Range Road where they accept all curbside recyclables, as well as additional items including tires without rims (limit 4), scrap metal, clothing and corrugated cardboard. This year's contest will be held in May. More information will be sent home in the spring regarding the time and location.
