Music, fireworks signed for 'Night'

When the Northwestern Recreation Commission met Feb. 26 contracts were signed for both the music of Steel Creek band and Celebration fireworks for the Night in the Country celebration in August.

The cost for the fireworks is $15,500. Celebration owner John Kemp of Weisenberg Township has been good at working with the commission.

The event is scheduled for Aug. 16 with an Aug. 17 rain date.

Committee Chair Kathy Hermany said a new source for tents will have to be found.

In other matters, stakes placed to deter snowmobilers seem to have cut down on the number illegally running on the recreation fields.

The steps in planting grass by Valley View Landscaping is use of a power rake and rock hound to remove small stones, place the seed and straw and spray a mixture that will keep the straw in place, Lynn Township representative Justin Smith reported.

Maintenance worker Jim Hughes asked if he was to prune the hedges. He will look into the price of a small generator so an electric clipper can be used. The list of maintenance projects proposed by Blades of Glory adds up to $9,000. Only $6,000 had been approved last year for this work.

Smith said Lynn Township is updating its plans for Ontelaunee Park. He did not know how that would affect the ball field availability.
