Cunningham makes Via Team of the Year
The awards continue to stack up for Northwestern senior Trista Cunningham.
After being named a Colonial League First Team All-Star during the high school season, Cunningham was then named to the Via All-Star Girls Team of the Year.
During the 39th Annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic on Super Saturday at Nortamton Area Community College, Cunningham scored eight points in the Colonial League's 64-62 win over the Lehigh Valley West to open the quadruple header of games. She was the lone Tiger representative throughout the Via events.
"It's definitely a lot of fun," Cunningham said. "It reminded me a lot of AAU basketball, geting to play with girls that I usually play against. They are really good. It's actually really nice being able to be on the same team as them, and have fun with them and cheer each other on."
Trailing for much of the game, the Colonial League made a run as the second half began to wind down. It started with Cunningham giving the Colonial League its first lead of the second half, 47-46, after putting in a layup with 7:15 to play. From that point on, the Colonial League went on a 14-4 run to lead by 11 in the final minutes.
However, a furious charge from LV West, capped off by a three-pointer from Allen's Tanisha Jones with 1:18 to play, made it a one-point game again. And despite a Colonial League turnover in the final 20 seconds, they were able to survive a potential game-tying jumper from Parkland's Olivia Brown that hit off the rim.
A lot of people give the nod to the Lehigh Valley Conference over the Colonial League when it comes to basketball talent. And knowing that certainly fueled the Colonial League players.
"I know people will say that all the time," Cunningham said. "So that's why we came out here, and we really, really wanted to show that we could be better than them, and we can win. We really wanted to win, and that's what we came out with. We couldn't be happier."
Leading the way for the victorious Colonial League squad was Saucon Valley's Bridgette Gilmore with 15 points. Emmaus's Andrea Watkins scored a game-high 16 for LV West.
The Via All-Star Banquet was held on March 26 at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center. All of the players were recognized at the banquet, while the boys and girls Via All-Star Teams, Via Players of the Year and scholar-athlete winners were named. Former NBA player James Worthy was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.
The event kicked off with the Via All-Star Basketball Clinics on March 23. Players from all of the Via teams helped a number of kids with special needs with the game of basketball at Northampton area Community College.
"I wasn't able to participate in the clinic," Cunningham said. "I wish I could have because it looked like a lot of fun. But the banquet was a lot of fun too."
The LV West boys got a little bit of revenge in the next game with their 97-96 win over the Colonial League. Emmaus's Joey Nicolini scored a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, for LV West. Notre Dame-Green Pond's Tanner Reed also added 20 on the Colonial League side.
The third game on Super Saturday featured an 85-83 win for the Lehigh Valley East girls over the Mountain Valley girls. In the finale, the Mountain Valley boys outlasted the Lehigh Valley East boys by a 125-122 final.
