Breakfast aids Slatington sesquicentennial

Linda Marlatt was coordinator of the breakfast sponsored March 30 by the Franklin Slaters at the Star Hose Fire Company of Emerald, Washington Township.

The group was a charter member of the Slatington 125th Anniversary Committee and members are expected to have a fundraiser to support the 150th Anniversary Committee, Marlatt said.

The Franklin Slaters also expects to have a float in the August parade celebrating the sesquicentennial.

Marlatt said the breakfast was the first but several people were asking if there would be another.

"We have a lot of good help and support from the community," said Marlatt. "Without the Emerald Fire Company, this would not be happening,"

She thanked the community for its support.

The original name of Emerald was Franklin, named after the Franklin Quarry. When a post office was established in Franklin, the postal service discovered there was an older town called Franklin and so the name had to be changed.

Emerald was chosen after the Emerald Quarry.

Rod Cressman said the Franklin Slaters formed 25 years ago and was re-established for the 150th anniversary.

He said the Star Hose Company provides fire protection for the Eastern District of Washington Township.

Proceeds of the breakfast will be split between building a float for the parade and the 150th Anniversary Committee.

"It's a family affair with multiple members of families helping," Marlatt said.
