Three Falcons participate in Via events
During the high school basketball season, Justin Aungst, Eddie Sanchez and Austin Uhl teamed up on the Salisbury boys' squad that earned berths in the Colonial League and District 11 Class AAA playoffs.
The three suited up as teammates once more last weekend, but this time in a bit of a different setting.
In the second game of the 39th Annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic on Super Saturday at Northampton Community College, Aungst scored 19 points as the Colonial League boys came up just short against Lehigh Valley Conference West, 97-96.
"Being selected to the All-Star team is a great accomplishment as it is," Aungst said. "Getting to participate in these events is even better. Coming out and playing, it was fun."
Aungst connected on a three-pointer, his third of the game, in the final 30 seconds to bring the Colonial League to within a point. But LVC West, despite leading by as much as 12 in the second half, would hang on down the stretch.
Eddie Sanchez scored 10 points for the Colonial League. He and Aungst both started the game and scored the first seven points for the Colonial League, while Aungst had seven of the squad's first 11. Uhl suited up for the game, but was held out due to an injury.
Tanner Reed (Notre Dame GP) led the Colonial League with 20 points, while Joey Nicolini of Emmaus paced the LVC West with 20.
"It's a great opportunity," Aungst said of playing with his fellow Colonial League teammates. "I know we've played against them the past four years. But finally playing with them and getting to know them, it was pretty cool."
Salisbury head coach Jason Weaver coached the Colonial League team. And while the up-and-down flow of the game isn't customary of his style during the varsity season, there was an exception on Saturday afternoon.
"Coming out here and playing with everybody, it was a fun time," Aungst said.
The quadruple header of basketball games on Saturday was the end of the Via festivities, but there was plenty more to talk about leading up to this past weekend.
On Wednesday night, the Via All-Star Banquet was held at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center.
The festivities started a week before the basketball games were played with the Via All-Star Basketball Clinics on Sunday, March 23. Before the players took the court, they helped a number of children with special needs at the game of basketball, too.
The Colonial League girls defeated Lehigh Valley West in the opening game, 64-62. In the third game, the Lehigh Valley East girls defeated the Mountain Valley girls, 85-83. The Mountain Valley boys capped off the day with their thrilling 125-122 victory over Lehigh Valley East.
