Dogs and cats running loose in Salisbury Township were on the increase last year compared to 2012, according to a 2013 report from Salisbury Township Animal Control Officer Charles Durner Jr.

There were 54 complaints about dogs running at large last year, up from 42 complaints in 2012.

There were 46 dogs apprehended last year, up from 34 in 2012.

There were 21 dogs returned to owners last year, up from 17 in 2012.

There were 32 dogs transported to the Lehigh County Human Society, up from 27 in 2012.

Barking dog complaints were the same: six last year and six in 2012.

There were 75 complaints about cats running at large last year, up from 59 complaints in 2012.

There were 75 cats apprehended last year, up from 68 in 2012.

There were no cats returned to owners last year, down from one in 2012.

There were 75 cats transported to the Lehigh County Human Society, up from 67 in 2012.

There were 74 other animal complaints last year, down from 79 in 2012.

There were five animal bites reported last year, down from 11 in 2012.

There were six complaints about animal feces last year, up from three in 2012.

There were 83 dead animals disposed of last year, up from 82 in 2012.

Durner sent 23 warning letters last year, an increase from 19 in 2012.

Five citations were issued last year, up from one in 2012.

Durner logged 141 call-out hours last year, down from 142 hours in 2012.

He logged 6,986 vehicle hours last year, down from 7,246 in 2012.

Salisbury Township budgets $11,000 annually for Lehigh County Humane Society stray animal housing and care.

In the K-9 Unit report, according to Senior Patrol Officer Jason Laky, more than 30 law enforcement K-9 teams participated in the third annual "K-9 Trials" last year at Salisbury High School.

Also, Trisha Burkhardt and Lehigh Valley County Animal Response Team donated a K-9 oxygen supply system to the K-9 team.

A ballistic vest was donated to Fonzie from the Hounds On Working Leashes.

The animal control and K-9 information is contained in the 2013 annual report released by Salisbury Township Chief of Police Allen W. Stiles released to the township board of commissioners and the media at the Jan. 27 township meeting.
