LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball and softball finally get under way

At this point in the season, the Salisbury baseball team should have five games under its belt.

However, with the uncooperative weather and poor field conditions across the area, the Falcons have been limited to just one game, a 5-0 win over Dieruff on Thursday. Four games have already been postponed. Monday's tilt with Notre Dame (Green Pond) was the latest to be postponed due to field conditions.

The two teams will play on Thursday at Notre Dame.

"There's only so much batting practice you can take inside the cage," Salisbury head coach Mike Pochron said. "You've got to get out and really play the games. That's what it's all about. They're anxious to get moving here."

While the Falcons have been able to take the field a number of times this season for practice, many of their sessions have come inside. And with practicing inside comes limitations that are not seen just at Salisbury, but across the Lehigh Valley as well.

"We've been inside so much and there's only so much you can do inside," Pochron said. "I think we're just tired of practicing, and we're ready to play games. I think they're just anxious and it gets a little old. We realize there is not much we can do. Everybody else is in the same boat.

"We've been lucky enough that our field has been dry enough at times that we have gotten outside. I'm not concerned that we haven't been on the field, [but] we haven't been able to play the games."

With four of their first five games postponed as of Monday, Pochron and his Falcon team are anxious to get on a regular schedule. It may take some time for that to pan out, however, as the postponements have lined up games on four consecutive days, starting with Palisades on Tuesday. The Falcons will then take on Wilson on Wednesday, Notre Dame (Green Pond) on Thursday and Southern Lehigh on Friday.

"Very few teams in high school have enough pitchers that you can play back-to-back days, let alone four days in a row," Pochron said. "We're going to have to pick our spots, go with a couple innings, get another guy in there, and try to save arms as best as we can so we can get through the week."

When they took the field against the Huskies, there was much that Pochron was pleased with as the game progressed. The pitching combination of Justin Aungst, Chad Cooperman, Evan Kulig and Brad Vangeli allowed just two Huskie hits and no walks.

Cooperman picked up the win for the Falcons.

"For him to get some confidence, get out there and get his first win, is important in the long run," Pochron said. "I think it's really going to help us because with the way the games are backed up, we're counting on him to give us a lot of innings now."

The Lady Falcons' softball team has endured its own dose of postponements to start the season, too. As of Monday, the Lady Falcons had missed three of their first five contests, including Monday's matchup against Notre Dame (Green Pond), which got rescheduled to Tuesday.

But through two games, the Lady Falcons have put together a 1-1 mark with a 14-5 victory over Palisades on Thursday to start the season. The Lady Falcons then came up short against Bethlehem Catholic, 11-1, over the weekend.

The Lady Falcons, too, will have their hands full in the upcoming week with games on Tuesday (against Notre Dame), Wednesday (at Wilson), Friday (against Southern Lehigh) and Saturday (against Allen).
