Kyle Smith became part of the Goodwill Fire Company, Germansville, at age 16 as a junior firefighter.
Volunteering is just something done in his family.
Mark, his father, is a past chief with the fire company. He began firefighting in the Air Force and, when that service was completed, he joined Goodwill.
Kyle loves being part of it.
"It's hard work but fun. I'm now a senior firefighter," he said.
He does interior and rescue work, and has training in rescue, ropes, basic and has his certification. He is also trained to drive the smaller trucks
His brother, Eric Laub, is also with the company.
At this time of year he is able to respond to many incidents, but in summer he works a heavy equipment job involving a great deal of travel.
Kyle was asked if he ever fought a really big fire.
"There is nothing bigger or smaller," he said. "They are just there and need attention."
Kyle said his mother worries about him.
"But she knew what to expect because of Dad," he explained.
