Fee increases are coming

State Representative Daniel McNeill, D-133rd, is warning residents of the impact of driver fee increases as a result of the recent transportation tax package he opposed.

"Beginning April 1, several fees for drivers will increase, some quite dramatically," McNeill said. "Many people are unaware of the extent of these fee increases so I wanted to warn them to help them budget for these higher costs."

According to the state transportation department, some of the more regularly used services to see an increase are:

· A certified driving record will triple from $10 to $30;

· Title security interest liens will rise more than 300 percent from $5 to $23;

· The fee for certificate of title and duplicate title will more than double from $22.50 to $50;

· Identification card fees will soar from $13.50 to $27.50;

· Duplicate identification card fees will increase from $13.50 to $27.50;

· Duplicate driver's license fees will rise from $13.50 to $27.50;

· Driver information costs will increase from $5 to $8;

· Vehicle information requests will increase from $5 to $8;

· Dealer notifications will increase from $3 to $5;

· Vanity plates will rise from $20 to $76, effective July 1;

· Counties may now charge a new $5 annual county registration fee for each vehicle their residents own. The counties must first pass an ordinance and the fee cannot be imposed until Jan. 1, 2015; and

· Driver's license and vehicle registration renewals will increase on July 1, 2015; the cost will be calculated by PennDOT.

On Jan. 1, the penalty for the basic violation of failure to obey traffic-control devices already increased from $25 to $150.

"I voted against the transportation package last year because I knew the fee increases and rising gasoline taxes would hurt working families," McNeill said. "It's a shame that these fees will have the deepest impact on the state's hard-working minimum-wage earners."
