Tennis team starts season on high note

The Salisbury boys' tennis team has certainly impressed a number of people after its first three matches.

The team started off the season against an opponent it hasn't had much success with in the last decade Southern Lehigh. The Falcons defeated the Spartans, 3-2, on March 14, and went on to a victory over Palisades (4-1) on Friday. They fell to Saucon Valley in between their two victories and were 2-1 as of Monday.

Salisbury head coach Rob Benson has been impressed with the team's start out of the gate, especially against their rival Spartans.

"I was talking to the Southern Lehigh coach, and she thinks it's at least 10 years," Benson said of Salisbury's last victory over the Spartans. "They've heard a lot of the talk that they're good. So I'm trying to get them to walk the walk."

No. 1 singles player John Yurconic has yet to lose this season. He started the season with a victory in two sets (7-5, 6-4) over the Spartans' Jason Renner. He then won against Saucon Valley's Michael Vidal (6-3, 6-4) and Palisades's Jimmy Sturm (6-2, 6-2).

"The first match against Southern Lehigh was a tougher match than it should've been," Benson said. "But he got his freshman legs under him."

During the Falcons' 4-1 defeat over the Pirates, No. 2 singles player Ben Heydt and No. 3 singles player Mason Groff both earnend victories in straight sets. Heydt defeated Nate Newborg (6-1, 6-4), while Groff took down Miquel Abalos (6-3, 6-2). Both are 2-1 on the season.

"I'm happy with it [the season], particularly after the Palisades match," Benson said. "My doubles teams have picked it up, and my No. 3 singles Mason [Groff], he learned to play in a way that I'm really proud of him. Obviously, Ben [Heydt] and John [Yurconic] have been solid all the way through."

While there has been plenty of success through three matches, Benson understands the importance of the team's upcoming schedule. He'll learn a lot about his team in the upcoming weeks, beginning with a match against Notre Dame (Green Pond) on Thursday.

"That will be a big match on Thursday," Benson said. "If we can pull that one off, it will tell everybody that we're for real."

Match time is set for 4 p.m at Notre Dame.
