Claussville Gardeners learn about Green Man mythology

Claussville Garden Club President Julie Fenstermaker called the group's recent meeting to order and asked Chaplain Mary Ann Hrabosky to offer an opening prayer.

Speaker for the evening was member Emily Vincent, whose topic was the Green Man.

"[This is] The archetype of our oneness with the earth," she explained.

As gardeners have an interest in plants she sugggested they explore the Green Man, a sculpture or drawing of a face surrounded by or made from leaves, with branches or vines bearing flowers or fruit coming from the nose or mouth these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Used as a decoration, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative gods and is a symbol of rebirth each spring.

"Look for them and enjoy looking for them in artwork and on buildings," Vincent explained.

Vincent referred to an article in a recent "Time Magazine," which showed a fresh Green Man face on display in the Bronx Botanical Garden in New York.

She displayed a wood carving, a small chest, made by her son, with Green Man symbols as well as several paintings of Green Men and plaster Green Men.
