Catasauqua Middle School students Jacob Becker, Jack Manogue, Mike Sauter and William Smith may be eighth-grade students, but they already know how to make a quality video.
The students, under the direction of Catasauqua Area School District Gifted Education teacher Dawn Fisher, created a two and a half-minute video in conjunction with B. Braun, Inc., detailing the manufacturing process. The video was created for the "Dream It Do It - What's So Cool About Manufacturing?" video contest.
"The program encourages this age group to go into manufacturing," Fisher said.
The students began working on the project October 2013. Before developing the video, the group of students went on a field trip to B. Braun, learned how the company functioned, conducted research, took videos of employee interviews and employees working, drafted a script for the video and edited the clips, ultimately resulting in a video detailing the manufacturing process.
During the course of the project the students encountered various challenges such as problems with filming and sound. The minor obstacles, however, did not affect the student's successfully moving forward with the project.
"It was more a focus of working with what we had and make it coherent," Mike said.
In the end, the students spent a total of 100 hours on the project, acquiring nearly 80 video clips.
"We did all the actual editing," Jacob said. "We took the most important parts and used that."
The project benefited the students, teaching them valuable lessons they can take with them in the future.
"I learned how much editing and skill it takes to take normal video," Jack said. "It really takes a lot of effort."
"I learned how to get around a problem I normally would not have encountered," William added.
Although the students did not take home a trophy, Fisher is impressed with the end product.
"They had a project I was really proud to send," Fisher said.
