On March 7 Central Catholic sent more than 100 students to Lehigh University as participants in the Model United Nations competition under the guidance of Deborah Heckenberger, a social studies teacher.

Students from across the Lehigh Valley attend the event and bring their ideas, skills and personalities to the table.

Model UN is a competition in which students take on the role of delegates from different countries in the United Nations. The delegates then meet with other students from different schools and propose different ideas regarding their selected committee and country, just like the real United Nations. The main purpose of the event is to spread an understanding of how countries can work together and how the United Nations works.

Each student joins a committee as a representative of a country. Students write resolutions which are ideas to help countries or improve standards of living. The resolutions are proposed and discussed. Votes are held to pass or dismiss resolutions.

Awards are given at the end of the day. First, second and third place awards are given to the top three delegates as well as the top delegates with the top three resolutions.

Central Catholic is proud to recognize its many students who received awards for their work at the Model United Nations. Central Catholic took first place as a school. This means all students who participated will return to Lehigh April 10 to meet with a real delegate from the United Nations.

Central Catholic congratulates all students who earned awards and is proud of the strong turn- out of students who represented their school so admirably.
