Boys swimmers seek more gold

As the Salisbury boys' swimming team focuses on a second consecutive state title, head coach Jason Mohring and the Falcons understand just how much of an importance the relay teams play on the final score.

During the Falcons' first state title in 2013, it was the 400-yard freestyle relay in the final event that captured gold, along with 40 team points, to secure the championship. Their 200-yard freestyle relay team came in fifth that year and tallied 28 points.

This year, the Falcons have the top seed in both of those relays. The foursome of Jon Anderson, Tim Costantini, Tyler Lesko and Mahlon Reihman will swim in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.36) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.66). It goes without saying the importance those two events hold for the District 11 Class AA champion Falcons.

"The relay points are double what the individual points are," Mohring said. "It's going to be close, so they need to continue on the path that they're going.

"I see where we can have a little improvement on both of the relays. I think we can have a little bit faster splits for some of the kids [and] better relay starts. I don't see why they can't take first place in both of those events."

Anderson will look to help secure points for the Falcons in his individual events as well. He has the second-fastest seed time in the 50-yard freestyle at 20.93, and he represents the third-fastest seed time in the 100-yard freestyle at 46.30.

Anderson came in fifth in the 100-yard freestyle and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle last season, and Mohring is expecting similar results in the senior's final high school meet.

"With what he put up this year, I think it was like two seconds faster than what he did in any other year," Mohring said. "I think we're all looking for him to do something more, but if that might be keeping it the same and getting a state title, then we'll be happy with that too."

The diving of last season's team was also critical in securing the championship. Junior Denny Bonner placed eighth with a score of 356.55 and scored 11 points for the Falcons. Bonner is seeded seventh in this year's tournament with a score of 451.10. Sophomore Danny Bujcs is seeded 23.

The impressive rookie season for Reihman continues to progress. Reihman will look to medal for the Falcons as he's seeded 12th in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.64) and 500-yard freestyle (4:51.73). Mohring certainly believes the freshman has an opportunity to medal in his two individual races.

"As you look at these times, everyone is going to be close," Mohring said. "It's just a matter of who can put it together at the right time and get the best finish. I think he definitely has a shot at top eight."

The PIAA AA Swimming and Diving Championships will be held on Friday and Saturday at Bucknell University.
