Salisbury High School Theatre presents 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

Despite having the first four rehearsals canceled and at least one or two canceled rehearsals a week due to snow, Salisbury High School Theatre is ready to present "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to the community.

The play "is an experiment of multiple worlds living side by side and how they break or blend with other," Director Will Windwor Erwin said. "The formality and custom of elders tries to dictate the hearts of youth, a fairy king and queen bicker and cause chaos in the natural world and a group of ragtag actors try to hit it big at the palace of a duke. Old and young. Fairy and human. Nobility and working class."

Erwin adapted the text so the human characters all speak in contemporary language. The fairies in the forest speak Shakespeare's timeless verse.

Costumes are a combination of Victorian for nobility and more comfortable clothes for the other actors.

Erwin said they created a soundscape using songs from the band "Sigur Rós."

Returning to Salisbury are CJ Matz as scenic designer and Chris West as lighting designer. Nina Elias also returned to Salisbury as rehearsal assistant. She was the music director and pit conductor for last fall's production of "Curtains."

Sinjon Bartel and Danny Walters play pucks or jesters. "We complete tasks for Oberon," Bartel said. "It's been a fun, great experience," Walters said.

For seniors Colin Smith, Shanice Torres, Darien Correa, John Leiderman, William Walsh, Nicholas Croft, Joey Dalton, AJ Foulke, Sarah Kim, Shannon Pennella, Killian Shay, Bartel, Tyler Lesko, Emily Ferrol, Austin Watson and Kayla Young this will be their last play at Salisbury.

For Correa and Torres, this play is their first and last. Correa said this experience was "amazing and unforgettable." Torres thanked the cast and crew for being so supportive.
