Boys swimmers seek second straight championship

The Salisbury boys' swimming team captured its first district championship back in 2012, and a year later, the Falcons added their second crown in school history.

When this season's District 11 AA Swimming Championships get underway on Friday, the Falcons will be the clear favorites to add another trophy to the case.

Of the 11 events, the Falcons will have top seed times in three of those races. In addition to that, the Falcons will have top-three seeds in every event but one.

"I think we have a good shot at, in all of the events that the kids are entered in, to place at least top three," head coach Jason Mohring said. "We have a relay that is seeded first. I'm hoping that all of the boys relays can win and get that first place."

The meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Jon Anderson is one of the Falcons that will have a top seed in an event. In the 50-yard freestyle, Anderson leads the pack with a seed time of 21.66. His seed time of 47.49 in the 100-yard freestyle ranks second amongst competitors.

Tim Costantini will have the top seed in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:09.57 and the third fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle (51:24).

"I'm looking for something special out of all of them," Mohring said. "Especially within this last week, with the type of practice we're doing, I'm noticing an increase in the intensity in the things we practice. You can just see it in their face that they want this."

A number of other Falcons hold top seed times going into districts. AJ Oliver has the third-fastest seed time in the 100-yard breaststoke (1:06.12), Mahlon Reihman has the third fastest seed time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.36) and 500-yard freestyle (5:04.12) and Tyler Lesko has the third fastest seed time in the 100-yard butterfly (56.78).

Each of the three relay teams ranks in the top two seeds.

"What we've been working on is decreasing the amount of yardage [and] keeping some intensity, but keeping that intensity very high," Mohring said. "We've just had a lot of rest relative to the work we're doing."

The Falcon diversDenny Bonner, Danny Bujcs and Tyler Kellerplaced second, third and fourth, respectively, to give the boys a sizeable margin heading into districts.

Alyssa Sipos, the Lady Falcons' only senior, will represent the girls in two individual events as Salisbury's top seed. She has the eighth fastest seed time in the 200-yard IM (2:31.26) and ninth fastest in the 100-yard freestyle (59.59).

"We both agreed that the 200-yard IM she [Sipos] could do pretty well in," Mohring said. "She came into this year not knowing what she wanted to swim. She was sort of the versatile one, and she could pretty much swim anything."

A number of underclassmen have put together solid seasons that resulted in district appearances as well. Kaleigh Bobeck will swim in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, while Rachel Costantini will swim the 100- and 200-yard freestyle.

"It will give them good experience for years to come on what to sort of expect at this meet," Mohring said.

"We're all excited. For some of the kids, this is the culminating event. This is what they train for all those long hours in the pool [and] coming to the optional practices when it's negative-two degrees outside. It all comes down to these two days."
