Falcons head into District 11 Tournament
While the Salisbury boys and girls basketball teams fell in the semifinals of the Colonial League tournament, both squads still have some basketball left to play.
As the district playoffs get underway this week, both Falcon teams will have an opportunity to avenge a number of tough losses in last week's league tournament.
The boys enter the District 11 Class AAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed after falling to Catasauqua in their semifinals matchup. They'll meet No. 5 seed Bethlehem Catholic on Friday night at Allen High School. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
In looking for a second consecutive appearance in the state playoffs, this season's run in districts will be a bit more challenging than last season's in which the Falcons won their third-place game against Pottsville.
The Falcons will be tested from the gate against the Golden Hawks, a team that went 8-6 in the Lehigh Valley Conference and 11-12 overall.
A win over Bethlehem Catholic would give Salisbury a berth into the semifinals and an opportunity to win one of its next two games to make another state playoff appearance.
The Golden Hawks have lost three straight games to end their season, including a 56-37 defeat to Central Catholic, a team the Falcons could see in districts for the second straight season.
Should Salisbury advance beyond the Golden Hawks, LVC champ Central Catholic (24-0) could be waiting in the semifinals. The Vikings will face the winner of Saucon Valley and Northern Lehigh in their quarterfinal matchup on Friday.
The Lady Falcons are coming off one of their more successful seasons in recent years, advancing to the Colonial League semifinals against Southern Lehigh last week.
When the District 11 Class AA Tournament gets underway on Friday, the No. 2 seed Lady Falcons will be one of five teams vying for a district crown.
They'll face No. 3 seed Pine Grove on Tuesday in the semifinals. Location and time are to be determined. The Cardinals were 8-4 in the Schuylkill League this season.
The Lady Falcons enter their third-consecutive district tournament. In their previous two showings they failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals.
The winner of Salisbury and Pine Grove will face either No. 1 seed Minnersville (13-0 in the Schuylkill League), No. 4 seed Pen Argyl (11-10 overall; 7-9 in Colonial League) or No. 5 seed Notre Dame-Green Pond (11-11 overall; 8-8 in Colonial League) in the finals.
