LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Students are excited to bring 'South Pacific' to WHS stage

Frequent snow days haven't been able to stop the students of the Whitehall theatre program from preparing for the spring.

In April, Whitehall theatre students will be performing "South Pacific," a 1949 Pulitzer-Prize-winning musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein that features the well-known songs "Some Enchanted Evening," "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair."

The play, which takes place during World War II, deals with love, prejudice, war and loss during a time when there was a lot of racial tension, Andrew Borghesani explained.

Borghesani, the show's director, said the musical was chosen not only because of its powerful history and messages, but also with this year's theatre members in mind.

"We picked 'South Pacific' because it showcases the talent we have. And it features a lot of guys, which is good because about half of our cast is guys," he said.

Tristan Morales, a senior who plays Joseph Cable, anticipates an excellent performance this year.

"Whitehall Theatre is growing and getting better. We all work hard as a tight-knit unit, so I know this is going to be a good show," Morales said.

Leka Ward, a junior with a supporting role in the play, displayed the same level of enthusiasm as Morales.

"A lot of the people are amazingly talented," she said. "I can't wait to perform."

Michael Maggio, who will have the lead role of Emile de Becque opposite Kim Casey as Nellie Forbush, is eagerly anticipating opening night.

"I'm grateful I ended up with this role," Maggio said. "I can't wait to show everyone what I can do."

Morales, Ward, Maggio and Casey are joined by 42 other cast members and three students in production crew as part of Whitehall Theatre.

These students gather to rehearse four days a week for four hours each night.

Stage manager Emily Bachman is one of the students who is always present at each of these meetings.

"Emily is here every rehearsal, writing stuff down and seeing what props are needed. She plays a huge role and gives a lot of her time," Borghesani said.

Others who have dedicated a lot of time to the show are Monique Hane, the assistant director; Vanessa Ruggiero, the choreographer; and Randi Dallevechia, the musical director.

Opening night for the show will be 7:30 p.m. April 7. The show will also be performed 7:30 p.m. April 8 and 9, and a final production will take place 2 p.m. April 10.

The cost of admission is $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.

Tickets may be purchased by calling 610-437-5081, ext. 93270, or by visiting www.whitehallmusic. com/southpacific.

Tickets will also be sold at Whitehall High School during the week of the performance.
