Breinigsville man killed in three-vehicle crash
A 77-year-old Breinigsville man was killed when his van was involved in a three-vehicle accident around 9:30 a.m. Feb. 10 in the 9200 block of Hamilton Blvd., Route 222, Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim says.
James Knappenberger of 9066 Wenz Road, Breinigsville, was pronounced dead 10:34 a.m. by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner George Wirth, Grim said.
An autopsy was scheduled for Feb. 11 to determine the cause of death.
Upper Macungie police say Knappenberger was driving a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan when it was struck in the rear by a 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Oliver Savage, 56, of Tall Timbers, Md.
The minivan then was hit by a 1999 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Sidney Huntoon, 70, of Bath.
According to police, Savage was northbound on Hamilton Boulevard approaching stopped traffic at the intersection with Newtown Road, when he failed to bring his tractor-trailer to a stop and struck the rear of Knappenberger's minivan.
The impact caused the minivan to cross the center of the road and go into the southbound lane of Hamilton Boulevard, where it was struck by Huntoon's tractor-trailer.
The minivan then came to rest in the center of Hamilton Boulevard.
After impact, Hun-toon's rig traveled off the roadway to the north and down a slight embankment.
There were no other injuries reported, police say.
Huntoon's tractor-trailer sustained a fuel leak and the Department of Environmental Protection was notified.
Trexlertown and Station 56 fire companies along with Cetronia Ambulance Corps personnel assisted at the scene.
Rapid Response Hazmat cleanup was contacted and responded to clean up the spill, police say.
Hamilton Boulevard was closed from Weilers Road southbound and from Schantz Road northbound as a result of this accident in the area of Hometown Diner.
Anyone who witnessed this accident is asked to call police at 484-661-5911.
