Two wrestlers take third place at tourney

The Salisbury wrestling team recently held its second annual Falcon Invitational on Sunday at the high school.

The Falcons, who finished in eighth place out of 10 teams with 55 points, had two wrestlers that placed in the top three of their weight classes. Trent Stump went 3-1 at 152 pounds, while Zach Adams won two of four matches matches at 120 pounds to lead the Falcons.

Following a defeat to Southern Lehigh's Matt Mirth (last season's district champion at 145 pounds in class AAA) to open the tournament, Stump recorded two pins and a forfeit victory to secure his third-place position. He continues to impress head coach Eric Snyder.

"He wrestled really well," Snyder said. "The other two matches that he wrestled, he looked really good and he pinned them really quick."

Adams put together a 2-2 record, and although falling to his opponent from Bangor early in the tournament, he was able to gain a little bit of revenge in the third-place match.

"He came back and wrestled a lot better," Snyder said. "He got beat by the kid from Bangor by a point earlier in the day, and when they wrestled for third, Zach beat him by a point."

In a tournament that saw nearly every wrestler get at least four matches, a number of others impressed Snyder with top-six finishes.

Nico Scarcia, like all of the wrestlers, was exposed to a number of competitive matches. He was bumped up a weight class to wrestle at 138 pounds and he captured a fourth-place finish after going 2-3. One of his opponents was Josh Evans of Palmerton (who made it to states in 2012).

"We thought it gave him a better opportunity to get some better matches in and wins under his belt," Snyder said. "He wrestled three pretty tough kids. He won his first two matches and then lost his last three, but still took fourth place."

One of the more pleasant surprises of the tournament was second-year wrestler Alex Nicholas, who took sixth place at 182 pounds and went 2-3 on the day. Even opposing coaches took notice of the strides he has taken in such a short amount of time.

"He got two wins under his belt, and that was good for him going into these next two matches here before districts," Snyder said. "I had a lot of coaches come up and compliment the way that he wrestled. They were kind of shocked that it was only his second year wrestling.

"I'm pretty happy with the way the guys wrestled the whole day. We had seven guys place in the top six in their weight classes."

Of the nine other teams competing in the tournament, the Falcons saw just two of them in the regular seasonSouthern Lehigh and Jim Thorpe. Snyder mentioned the positive effect of his wrestlers competing against some of these out of area teams.

"That's what we try to do with our schedule," Snyder said. "We try not to wrestle the same teams over and over again.

"It's good for our guys to get that different experience and see different types of wrestling, because all areas are different types of wrestlers and bring different things to the table. It gives them more experience, especially going into the district tournament here in about two weeks."

Warwick won the tournament with 168 points, while Bangor (149) and Southern Lehigh (130) rounded out the top three team finishers.

The Falcons concluded their conference schedule on Tuesday against Wilson. They'll travel to Allen on Wednesday night to cap off the regular season at 6:30 p.m.
