Falcons are fine-tuning for districts
With the upcoming district championship meet set to take place in a little more than two weeks, the Salisbury boys and girls swimming teams are looking to fine tune their times in the final week of the season.
The Falcons, which will end the regular season with meets against three consecutive Lehigh Valley Conference opponents, took to the pool against Allen on Monday evening.
The boys team continued its impressive run on the season with another win. In a rescheduled meet from December 10, the boys' 113-63 victory over the Canaries kept the Falcons undefeated. A number of girls had solid days in the pool, but the Lady Falcons came up just short in their 98-73 defeat.
"We're looking to have some good times, and finish off the season with a bang," head coach Jason Mohring said. "And then start heading into our final phases of the season."
Mohring decided to have a number of his swimmers race in different events against the Canaries, exposing them to a few different scenarios at the end of the season. While the girls continue to gain experience swimming in various events, the boys team continues to show its versatility in all areas.
"Especially on the girls side with some of the newcomers, at first they're like 'I don't want to swim this,' but then they swim it and they kind of like the event," Mohring said. "It's a good way for them to grow in the sport.
"One nice thing about most of our guys is that they're just versatile all around. They have a lot of depth."
Jon Anderson, who normally races in the 200-yard freestyle, added another solid outing in that event against the Canaries. He swam a 1:53.12 and captured first place for the Falcons.
"I'm kind of blessed to walk into this situation that I walked into with this group of kids," Mohring said. "They're just very versatile, and they can swim well at any given point."
A number of Lady Falcons continued to impress Mohring as the regular season winds down. Kaleigh Bobeck put together a season-best time of 1:20.81 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Rachel Costantini rallied in the final 25 yards of the 200-yard freestyle to capture first place with a time of 2:19.34. Brooke Rogers won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:19.56.
Denny Bonner also broke his previous pool and school record in six-meter diving against Quakertown, back on January 31, with a score of 296.35.
Prior to facing the Canaries to begin the week, the Falcons hosted Dieruff a little over a week ago. Both the boys (113-48) and girls (85-36) were able to secure wins against the Huskies.
On Thursday, the Falcon will conclude their regular season against one of the LVC's top squads in Parkland. The Trojan boys team is currently 7-3 in the conference. Not only does Mohring want the boys' team to end the season on a high note, but the swimmers will get a preview of the pool they'll be competing in come the postseason.
"It's also a good chance for them to swim in the pool that they'll be swimming in at districts," Mohring said. "It'll give some of those newcomers a chance to feel what that pool feels like."
