Miles Blumenau captured the eighth-grade class crown in the annual Whitehall-Coplay Middle School spelling bee competition. Competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the winning word Miles spelled was"postponable." Miles also won the building competition.
"The win was Miles' third consecutive grade-level and building-level victory.
"It's an unprecedented feat to everyone's knowledge at the middle school," Principal Peter Bugbee said.
Bugbee said students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades at the middle school competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Miles will now move on to the regional spelling bee competition later this month.
The competition at the middle school began in homerooms, then advanced to grade-level and finally building-wide competition.
The sixth-grade winner was Connor Chase, and runner-up, Milaya Allen. Connor was also the building's runner up.
The seventh-grade winner was Ariz Yacoub, and runner-up Emely Minaya.
The eighth-grade winner was Miles Blumenau, and runner-up Catherine Chen.
All of the grade-level champions competed in the building level competition.
"The students did a great job in the building-level final with page after page of words being spelled correctly, until eighth-grader Miles Blumenau finally prevailed over sixth-grader Connor Chase," Bugbee said.
