St. Ann School entry takes first place in its diorama contest division at PEEPSFEST

"Peeps Around the World," the entry from St. Ann School, Emmaus, took top honors in the seventh through 12th grade, or teen, division of the 2013 PEEPS diorama competition during PEEPSFEST.

PEEPSFEST, sponsored by Just Born Quality Confections candy company and ArtsQuest, took place Dec. 30 and 31, 2013, at the SteelStacks event center in Bethlehem.

The competition featured about 100 dioramas incorporating PEEPS candy, a sugar-coated marshmallow confection made by Just Born.

In an email, Angela Faidley, an art teacher at St. Ann, noted the diorama was created by the art club at St. Ann School. Club membership is mostly seventh and eighth grade students who meet outside of school once a month.

The "Peeps Around the World" entry grew out of student interest in superheroes represented by the three gingerbread figures the students used in the diorama. Faidley noted the world featured in the design was initially incorporated to provide a brace to help the superhero figures stand.

"So painstakingly blue bunny and green peeps were cut in half and stuck to a real globe," Faidley said by email of the globe once it became a permanent feature of the diorama.

The "Peeps Around the World" diorama also uses Mike and Ikes and Hot Tamales candies from the Just Born line of merchandise.

This is the second win in the diorama competition for St. Ann School in recent years.

Three years ago St. Ann students took best in show in the PEEPSFEST contest with a diorama of an art museum, Faidley noted.

St. Ann School, a parochial school, is located at 415 S. 6th Street, Emmaus.
