Boys win two more meets
Even though Jason Mohring understood he was taking over a swimming program that had plenty of success last season, particularly on the boys' side, even he is a bit surprised at the team's season thus far.
The Salisbury boys' swimming team recently added two more wins to its record, beating Southern Lehigh on Friday (111-69) and against Nazareth on Saturday (109-74). The wins bring the Falcons' season mark to a perfect 8-0.
And while Mohring understands the Falcon boys' best times may still to be to come, he couldn't be more pleased with the team's transition from a year ago.
"They're exceeding my expectations," Mohring said. "They're continuing to impress us. It's truly amazing. These kids really put it all on the line. They know they have the talent to do well, and they want to do well."
After recently breaking a number of Falcon diving records, Denny Bonner was at it once again on Friday against the Spartans. He set a new pool and school record in six dives with a score of 280.85, breaking his previous best of 276.90 against Stroudsburg.
"His coach, Carey Lehman over at Parkland Diving, is doing something correctly," Mohring said. "He's just doing his thing."
What is most interesting about this team is the overall mix of experienced swimmers and newcomers. Jon Anderson, Ryan Andrews, Ian Carey, Tim Costantini and Tyler Lesko were all vital parts of last year's state run, while freshmen Arthur Oliver and Mahlon Reihman have been pleasant contributors in the lanes. All are performing at a high level for the Falcons in their quest for another postseason appearance.
Anderson took first place in the 100-yard freestyle (48.56) and 200-yard freestyle (1:49.64) against the rival Spartans, while Andrews finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.73). Costantini took the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.56) against the Spartans.
"He [Costantini] is in most of our relays that usually get first place," Mohring said. "He's a huge contributor."
The two freshmen continue to grow each meet as well. Oliver captured first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.73) against Southern Lehigh, while Reihman took first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.98) against the Spartans. Reihman also earned the top spot in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyles against Nazareth a day later.
"He [Reihman] pretty much has been pretty dominant in the 500," Mohring said. "I don't think he has lost that event yet. Yesterday [Friday against Southern Lehigh], he got second only to Jon [Anderson] in the 200 free."
Anderson, Lesko, Oliver and Reihman set a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle relay against the Blue Eagles too.
On the girls' front, the Falcons were at a disadvantage from the start of Saturday's meet against Nazareth. But despite only having six swimmersand missing their leader in Alyssa Siposagainst the Lady Eagles, Mohring continues to see individual progression.
Rachel Costantini recorded a district-qualifying time against Southern Lehigh in one of her events.
"She [Costantini] got her district-qualifying time in the 200 freestyle," Mohring said. "She got that by one one hundredth of a second."
Mohring was pleased with some individual races that his swimmers put together over Friday and Saturday.
"We had a few girls hit consideration times, not necessarily qualifying times," Mohring said. "Kaleigh Bobeck dropped a lot of time in her 500 freestyle. That was very good for her."
