Lady Falcons win sixth straight game
When the Salisbury girls' basketball team hosted Allen on Wednesday night, the Falcons were all too familiar with what transpired a year ago.
Just like last season, the Falcons entered their matchup against the winless Canaries with a 9-5 overall record. The Canaries were without a win last year as well, but their victory over the Falcons put them back into the win column.
With the Canaries looking to rewrite what they accomplished last season, Meagan Eripret and the Falcons made sure they squashed any talk of a possible letdown.
Behind 28 points and 17 rebounds and five blocks from Eripret, the Falcons (11-5 overall; 7-3 in Colonial League) defeated the Canaries on Wednesday night at Salisbury High School, 54-34, for their fifth straight win. Friday's 53-45 win over Palmerton pushed the Falcons' streak to six straight victories.
"Last year they were 0-10, and we took them lightly and they beat us," Eripret said following the Allen game. "That was one thing that was definitely in our minds. We didn't want to lose to them again.
"It feels good especially since they beat us last year. It feels good to know that we can actually do that kind of damage against really anybody."
After the Canaries took a 13-11 lead, their only lead of the game, on a driving layup by Tanisha Jones with 4:39 to play in the first half, the Falcons went on a 21-0 run that stretched into the third quarter to regain control.
Since falling behind by two, the Falcons responded by scoring the final 12 points of the second quarter.
Amanda Rowlands' layup from Kelly Gonoude pushed the Falcons' lead to 20-13, and moments later, Eripret's bucket at the end of the half put Salisbury in front by 10.
That momentum transitioned into the third quarter, as the Falcons outscored the Canaries 17-6, including the first nine points of the quarter to push their lead to 32-13. Eripret scored nine in the quarter.
The Falcons wouldn't be threatened in the final 16 minutes, as they would hold onto their double-digit lead for the entire second half. The Falcons went in front by as many as 23 in the third quarter.
"We just had to get into the right mindset," Eripret said. "Even though everybody said we can't take them lightly, I think we still had a little bit in our minds that we were going to win this game. Obviously, if we had played the whole game like we played the first quarter, it definitely wouldn't have turned out in our favor."
Gonoude recorded nine points and six steals for the Falcons, while Kelly Garrigan added six points.
The Canaries got a team-high 10 points from Jones, as well as eight points and nine rebounds from Taylor Styles.
Following a losing skid in which the Falcons dropped five of six games, they've responded to put together a stretch of six straight wins, including five Colonial League foes.
"We were a little shaky confidence-wise," Eripret said. "But now with every win, we gain more confidence. We're getting fired up and we're ready to go."
The Falcons will travel to Palisades on Thursday. Results from Tuesday's game against Northern Lehigh were not available at time of press.
