Nicole Sagl continued to impress on the local diving scene by taking the Lehigh Valley Conference Diving Championship for the third time in her career.
Sagl, who attends Central Catholic, won the 11-dive event by 40 points over Easton's Kelsey Jehl, her nearest competition.
Luckily for Sagl, the competition went much better than her practice leading up to the event, because she wasn't happy with her performances coming into Saturday's meet.
"I had a really bad practice [Friday], but I came in and my warm-up was pretty strong and all of my hurdles were on and as soon as I started up, everything was really consistent," said Sagl, who admitted that she got off to her usual slow start in a competition like this.
"The first dive or two, I usually tense up and it's usually by about the third dive until I get used to the rhythm and waiting in between dives."
Sagl and Jehl were separated by just 10 points after their first five dives, but Sagl put together big scores on her seventh and eighth dives, while Jehl struggled in those rounds.
As if to put away any doubt, Sagl again delivered impressive dives on her last two dives of the meet to lock up the win. Even when she started to put a little breathing room between her and second place, Sagl wasn't taking anything for granted.
"Kelsey's a really good diver, so I thought she had a chance of coming back," said Sagl.
On the boys side, Sagl's Central Catholic teammate Nick Crouse also picked up a win in the event, beating out three Parkland swimmers who jockeyed for the top spot. Like Sagl, Crouse strung together impressive scores later in the meet to pull away from the pack.
