Salisbury girls swim team gets season's first win
Heading into the girls' final race, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Lady Falcons held an 81-71 lead over East Stroudsburg North.
With the possibility of ending up in a tie, the Lady Falcons made a statement in that final race that showed they wouldn't accept anything less than a win.
Both freestyle relay teams finished in first and second place, including the foursome of Kaleigh Bobeck, Rachel Constantini, Mackenzie Sikora and Alyssa Sipos, who took first with a time of 4:25.50.
The relay win solidified the Lady Falcons first win of the season with a 93-73 victory on Saturday afternoon at KidsPeace.
"At the end, everyone was definitely very tired," Sipos said. "We've had some really hard practices this week. But the fact that each person could find it within themselves to just keep pushing it as hard as they could and do the best that they could really made me happy."
"The last race, they put it all out there," Salisbury head coach Jason Mohring said. "They were really tired out there, that's for sure."
Sierra Mamay, Taylar Velten, Kelly Kucsan and Brooke Rogers were the second-place team in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 4:43.05.
The Lady Falcons had first-place finishers in every event but two. Sipos and Bobeck captured the top spot in each event they raced.]
Sipos secured first place in the 200-yard individual (2:38.44), 100-yard freestyle (1:02.54), 200-yard medley relay (2:15.95) and 400-yard freestyle relay (4:25.50), while Bobeck placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:23.17) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:18.03), as well as the two relay teams.
"We have a lot of really new swimmers, and the progress that they've made makes me really proud," Sipos said. "They do it day-to-day and they have their own goals, but today they really brought it."
"I think it instilled a lot of confidence for some of the newer girls because they are swimming so well now," Mohring said. "They're definitely seeing their potential and the potential within the team."
One race that particularly impressed Mohring was the 50-yard freestyle in which all three of the Lady Falcons that raced the event hadn't swam at the high school level before. Velten finished in first place with a time of 29.62 seconds. Mamay came in third (31.11) and Kuscan finished fourth (32.69).
Those three swimmers, along with Sikora, finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, too.
"I was just ecstatic with that," said Mohring of the 50-yard freestyle. "They swam a heck of a race."
Constantini came in first place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:26.53).
On the boys' side, the Falcons finished in first place in all 12 events to continue their solid start to the season with a 128-53 win.
Jon Anderson finished in first in the 100-yard butterfly (55.82), 200-yard freestyle (1:53.62), 200-yard medley relay (1:45.44) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.20). Tim Constantini took first in the 100-yard freestyle (53.00), 200-yard IM (2:15.72), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.63) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.20).
Due to a number of weather cancellations earlier in the season, the Falcons will endure an upcoming week that includes three meets. Over the course of those three meets, Mohring would like to see his team remain consistent during a busy stretch.
"Hopefully they'll keep the strokes together, but they'll get a feel for racing when they kind of don't feel the best," Mohring said. "And that will hopefully translate toward districts and states to racing well."
"This next stretch here is going to really show how well they're doing. If they can keep times consistent throughout these next few weeks where we're pretty heavy on meets, I'll be very happy."
