Boys win first home meet of season

Wanting to open up their home pool on the right note against Central Catholic, Salisbury swimming head coach Jason Mohring pushed his team throughout the week of practice heading into last Friday morning's meet.

And it sure looked as if the Falcons benefited from those practice sessions.

The boys added another win to their slate after securing the 110-74 win over the Vikings at KidsPeace to open their home schedule. The girls battled in every event, however, the Vikings captured the 102-57 victory.

"They probably didn't swim as well as they wanted to swim, but they swam how I wanted them to swim," Mohring said. "So they weren't going to hit best times, and they probably weren't going to hit in-season times that they normally hit. But the guys coming out on top with the win is big."

Jon Anderson, who captured four first-place finishes (two individual and two team relays) on Friday, was a big reason the Falcons ended up on top.

Anderson started off his day with a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.41, and followed that up with the top time in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.56.

"Jon is just an all-around good swimmer," Mohring said. "He works hard in practice, and he comes to the meets and works even harder. Everything is like a championship meet to him."

"I try to get off the wall as fast as possible and I try to be the first one off the blocks," Anderson said. "I definitely try to get out fast and try to hold it so I can finish first."

Anderson also swam the opening leg in the Falcons' 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relays that captured first place.

"This is our first home meet, and we really just wanted to give it our all," Andrson said. "I put 100 percent in every race. It's just when you're tired and you get to the last couple of races, you start wearing down a bit."

The Falcon boys, who won every event except the 100-yard backstroke, had a steady contribution across the board to go along with Anderson.

Mahlon Reihman also finished in first place in four events-the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.86), 500-yard freestyle (5:11.28), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.75) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:27.97).

Tyler Lesko swam a 58.20 in the 100-yard butterfly to capture first place, and he also earned first-place finishes in both the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.

"We're tired," Mohring said. "These kids are tired, and you can see it in their swimming. But they're not letting up [and] they keep going. We have the freshman Mahlon [Reihman] who is just coming out of the woodwork and is going all out. AJ [Oliver] is also another freshman, and he's swimming his butt off."

On the girls' side, Alyssa Sipos had a solid day for the Falcons in a number of events. She finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:36.39) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.15).

"She got second in the free just by a hair, by like .10," Mohring said. "She was pretty impressive. We're trying to get her to do a little bit more sprint work."

Rachel Constantini finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:19.55) and second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:24.32).

The Falcons girls 200-yard freestyle relay team of MacKenzie Sikora, Sierra Mamay, Kelly Kucsan and Booke Rogers finished in first place with a time of 2:03.51.

The Falcons travel to Saucon Valley for a meet this Saturday at 9 a.m.
