Sanchez nets career high in win

Salisbury guard Eddie Sanchez had arguably the best game of his career in the Falcons' toughest game to date on the young season.

But it wasn't the game-high 25 points, or his overall shooting performance from the field (10-of-14) that he was quick to point out regarding his offensive game. In fact, Sanchez, who's always looking to improve, was a bit disappointed in his last shotthe second free throw of a one-and-one opportunity that was just off target.

Still, the Falcons were able to hold off a fourth-quarter surge from Southern Lehigh on Saturday afternoon, and escape with the 61-54 win at Salisbury High School over their division rivals.

"I missed a free throw, and I don't like that," Sanchez said. "It's just me being aggressive, and just playing my game. I feel like nobody can really stop me on the offensive end. I can score as many points as we need for our team to win, and I can get my teammates the ball."

The win keeps the Falcons (4-0 overall; 3-0 in the Colonial League) undefeated on the season. They defeated Wilson on Thursday, 58-46 and are the lone undefeated team in the South Division.

"It's a great win for us," head coach Jason Weaver said. "We're getting better every game. Southern Lehigh is a very good team."

The Spartans, who entered Saturday's tilt at 3-1 in the Colonial League-trimmed an 11-point Falcon lead in the fourth to four with under two minutes remaining.

After a Falcon technical foul resulted in two Spartan free throws, Mike Zabrecky then connected on a three-point play on the same possession to trim the Falcons' lead to five. Jason Renner hit a free throw to make it 52-48 in favor of Salisbury, capping off a 6-0 Southern Lehigh run.

That's as close as the Spartans would come.

The Falcons responded to score seven of the next nine points to hold a 59-50 lead in the final seconds.

"It got a little sloppy down the stretch," Weaver said. "But I think after that, we got some possessions and they were fouling us, and we did enough from the line to be able to hold on."

Brendan Reichenbach hit five of six free throws in the final 1:04.

Neither team was able to separate itself much in the first half. Each team held a four-point lead through the first 16 minutes, and Salisbury held a 28-27 lead at halftime.

It was a 17-9 advantage in the third quarter that gave the Falcons a bit of a cushion.

Salisbury's Justin Aungst, who finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, found Austin Uhl for a layup that increased the Falcons' lead to 33-27 early in the third. Uhl, who tallied 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, then assisted to Sanchez for a layup that capped a 7-0 run to start the quarter.

Aungst then connected on another bucket with 3:41 to play in the third that put Salisbury ahead 39-31. The Spartans cut the deficit to seven, but Sanchez responded with a three-pointer on the left baseline to push it back to double digits. Aungst then hit a jumped to give the Falcons their biggest lead at 12.

While the Spartans threatened the Falcons throughout the final quarter, Sanchez had an answer whenever the team needed a basket.

The Spartans trimmed the Falcons' lead to nine going into the fourth, but Sanchez had a layup to open up the final quarter that pushed it back to 11. After four straight Spartan points that made it 47-40, Sanchez hit his third three-pointer to make it a 10-point game again.

"Every game when he is playing well, that is obviously building some confidence," Weaver said. "He's knocking down shots and he's finishing at the rim. I think that's the most important thing."

Zabrecky finished with 12 points and three steals for the Spartans, while Krause added 11 points and Noah Kandt tallied eight.

Results from Monday's game against Palisades were not available at time of press. The Falcons will play in the Parkland Basketball Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
