Boys swim team starts fast
Saturday's Bucknell Invitational was scheduled to be Salisbury's fourth swimming meet of the 2014 season.
However, due to a number of weather postponements early in the season, the Falcons have only been in one regular season meet thus farthe opener against Moravian Academy.
While the team has had limited time in the pool, head coach Jason Mohring has been pleased with a number of facets on both the boys and girls sides.
The boys' team opened up the season with a 104-62 win over Moravian Academy before finishing seventh out of 21 schools that were scored in the Bucknell Invitational.
"We actually didn't do too bad considering it looks like a lot of the teams that beat us were [Class AAA] on the boys side," Mohring said of his team's performance at Bucknell. "It's pretty good considering the fact that we swam off events."
Jon Anderson has had a solid start out of the gate. He came in first place in the 200-yard freestyle against the Lions in the beginning of December. His time of 1:50.30 was nearly 16 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Salisbury's Ben Wiener.
Anderson also came in first place in the 100 freestyle (48:30) against the Lions.
"In our first meet at Moravian Academy, Jon Anderson came out really strong and was really impressive," Mohring said. "He swam a 48.30 in the 100-yard freestyle, which is absolutely incredible for the first meet."
Tyler Lesko has also been a pleasant surprise early in the season. He finished in first place in the 100-yard bubutterfly (58:23) and second in the 50 freestyle (23.97) against Moravian Academy.
Falcons freshman Mahlon Reihman broke his personal-best time in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.93 at the Bucknell Invitational.
"That time is incredible for this stage of the game, and for a kid who is so young," Mohring said.
The divers were a big part to the team's success last season, and they're off too a solid start already. Dennis Bonner placed second at Bucknell, and Daniel Bujcs came in seventh.
The girls' side came up short to open the season with a 119-40 loss to the Lions, but Mohring has been pleased with the growth the team has endured.
The team's lone senior, Alyssa Sipos, wanted to shift her focus on one event this season after swimming a wide range of races last year. After talking with Mohring, the two thought her best fit would be as a sprint freestyler.
Sipos came in second place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.26) and finished just fractions of a second behind Moravian's Kyra Manson. She was also second in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 59.85, just .46 seconds behind Moravian's Devon Korhammer.
"She was an all-around person before, and coming into her senior year, she said that she would like to focus on a particular stroke or a particular event," Mohring said. "She has been swimming really well in those events [50 freestyle and 100 freestyle] for the two times that we swam."
Several Falcon swimmers who just started swimming this season, such as Kelly Kucsan, Sierra Mamay, Taylar Velten and Zach Karaounos, have picked it up rather quickly.
