Liberty takes control in overtime

The final game of the 2013 Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic at Liberty High School between teh host Hurricanes and Emmaus needed more than 32 minutes to declare a winner.

Following four quarters of play in which neither team separated itself by more than six points, the teams went into overtime tied at 45-45.

The Hurricanes, however, quickly took control of the extra quarter. Following a layup by the Hornets' Joey Nicolini to start overtime, the Hurricanes responded with the next 10 points to secure the 55-47 victory.

With a little more than three minutes to play, KJ Williams connected on a three-pointer from the right wing that put the Hurricanes ahead 48-47. A little more than a minute later, Williams' driving layup increased their lead to three.

"I thought that was the difference in the game because KJ got going after that," Yoder said. "The momentum shifted."

While the Hurricanes were able to separate themselves in overtime, Yoder believes his team had a number of opportunities in regulation to take control a bit more.

"You can't really pinpoint that moment," said Yoder, "because we had moments earlier in the game that I thought we could've taken the game in a different direction and maybe come out on the other end of things."

The Hurricanes hit five of six free throws in the extra period, and missed just one of their 17 attempts for the entire game.

The Hornets hit just one of seven field goals in overtime, and committed three critical turnovers that kept them scoreless for the final 3:33.

Freshman David Kachelries and senior Nate Feiertag were very much responsible for guiding the Hornets to a 14-12 lead after the first quarter.

Kachelries hit three of his four field goal attempts in the quarter, including a three-pointer, and score seven points. Feiertag too scored seven points in the opening quarter.

The two combined to score 16 of the Hornets' 21 points at halftime.

"What I like about it is he [Kachelries] fits in with the older boys as well, and they've embraced him," Yoder said.

"I don't like to talk about individuals too much because it's really about us collectively, but David had a great night."

Down 41-40 late in the fourth quarter, the Hornets collected a long rebound and Tyler Prescott found Kachelries for the go-ahead layup. He was also fouled on the play and made the free throw, putting the Hornets ahead 43-41 with 1:41 to play.

The Hurricanes were able to tie the game on two occasions, most lately with 32 seconds to play on a bucket by DeShawn Oyeniyi that sent the game into overtime.

Kachelries finished with a team-high 14 points and four steals. He was named Emmaus' player of the game.

"I'm very proud of him," Yoder said. "He's going to be a good one for us. I think he showed that he's ready to play."

Feiertag finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Joey Nicolini added six points to pace the Hornets.

Oyeniyi, who has named Liberty's player of the game, had a game-high 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.

Williams finished with 16, and Anthony Miller tallied 10 points and eight boards.

Results from Tuesday's game against Stroudsburg were not available at press time. The Hornets will face Allen on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
