George Wolf principal named; assistant principals appointed
A new principal has been named at George Wolf Elementary School and several other appointments have been made in the Northampton Area School District.
NASD school board members voted 8-0, with one school director absent, at the Nov. 11 meeting to approve the appointment of Stephen Serensits as the George Wolf Elementary School principal, effective on or before Jan. 17, 2014, or the last day of the first semester. His salary will be $90,000, prorated with benefits.
Serensits, a Northampton native, is a member of the Northampton Area High School Class of 1985. He received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from West Chester University and a master's in elementary education from Lehigh University, where he also received a teaching certificate.
Serensits has worked for the Allentown School District for six years, including four years as assistant principal at Trexler Middle School. He and his wife live in East Allen Township and are the parents of three children.
Also during the meeting, school board members voted unanimously to approve the transfer of Elizabeth Grammes, Northampton Area Middle School assistant principal, to the position of Borough Elementary Schools assistant principal on or before Dec. 9, with no increase in salary.
Grammes has been middle school assistant principal for three years. Before that she was a Siegfried Elementary School teacher for two years. She also taught at Our Lady of Hungary, Northampton.
Grammes, a Northampton native, is an Allentown Central Catholic graduate. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Shippensburg University and a principal certification from The Pennsylvania State University. She and her husband live in Washington Township and have four children.
Jaclyn Welsh, K-12 mathematics supervisor, will be transferred to the position of assistant principal of Northampton Area Middle School on or before Dec. 9, with no increase in salary, following a unanimous school board vote.
Welsh has been an NASD math coach for one year, a Northampton Area Middle School math supervisor for four years and a Northampton Area Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade math teacher for seven years.
An Emmaus High School graduate, she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Kutztown University, a master's from Wilkes University and a principal certification from Cabrini College. She lives in Allentown.
Michelle Schoeneberger has been appointed K-12 mathematics and science supervisor, effective Dec. 3 or upon release from her previous employer. Her salary will be $75,000, prorated with benefits.
Schoeneberger, a Nazareth Area High School graduate, received a bachelor's degree in biology from Bucknell University, and a master's in education and an administrator's certificate from the University of Scranton.
She has been a science teacher for five and a half years at Nazareth Area High School. She and her husband, residents of Upper Nazareth Township, have one son.
The board also approved the following at the Nov. 11 meeting:
· Resignation of Douglas Fehnel as assistant girls volleyball coach, effective after the 2013 fall season;
· Resignation of Robert Hock as assistant girls softball coach, effective Oct. 29;
· A paid childbearing leave for Krista Maxwell beginning on or about March 10, 2014, through May 2, 2014, and an FMLA childrearing leave, with no pay but with benefits per federal government regulations, for the period beginning on or about May 5, 2014, through June 2, 2014;
· Resignation of Rosemarie Perretta as long-term substitute speech and language pathologist, effective Nov. 20;
· Instructional assistant transfers effective Jan. 2: Lisa King, from Moore Elementary School special education to Northampton Area High School library, and Aaron Knepp from Northampton Area Middle School to special education at Moore Elementary School;
· A paid Childbearing Leave for Lacey Snyder beginning on or about Feb. 18, 2014, through March 13, 2014, and an FMLA childbearing leave, with no pay but with benefits per federal government regulations, for the period beginning March 14, 2014, through on or about March 28, 2014;
· New job description for math-science supervisor, effective Nov. 12;
· Resignation of Robert Vorholy, custodian, for retirement, effective Jan. 10.
· Appointment of Courtney Scholl, speech and language pathologist, effective on or before Jan. 13 at a salary of $49,198, prorated.
· Attendance of Alison Lucas and Melissa Giacometti at the National Association of School Psychologists Convention, Feb. 18-21, 2014, in Washington, D.C., at an approximate cost of $1,338. This amount is included in the 2013-14 board-approved curriculum budget;
· Participation of April Krempasky, Theresa Wenck and Julia Kline in the 2014 German American Partnership Program (GAPP), which includes accompanying NASD students to Germany for the exchange visit and coordinating and hosting the visiting German students to NASD. Cost to NASD for the program will not exceed $2,700. The cost for this program is included in the board-approved 2013-14 curriculum budget;
The board approved the following extracurricular staff members and stipends for the 2013-14 school year: Brian Davies, assistant boys basketball coach, $4,231.44 without benefits; Rachel Fisher, yearbook advisor at Northampton Area Middle School, $1,936 (pro rated); Lori Scheaffer, flute choir advisor, elementary schools, $840; and Janice Tanzola for a maximum of 15 hours of training to the new Northampton Area High School secretary at an amount not to exceed $361. The cost for the training is included in the board-approved 2013-14 high school budget.
Also approved were the following additions to the district volunteer master listing for the 2013-14 school year: Anne Breidenbach, Lehigh Elementary School; Hollie Gibbons, Borough Elementary Schools; Christopher Greb, Borough Elementary Schools; Kathleen Hayes-Reph, band; Michelle Hirsch, George Wolf Elementary School; Cecilia Palko, George Wolf Elementary School; Laura Pulieri, Elementary Schools.
