LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN

The Friends of the Lower Macungie Library will hold a book sale 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23 at the library. A bag sale will be 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 23. A members preview night is scheduled 5 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21. Join the members and shop at the advanced sale night. Proceeds benefit the library.

The Friends' next meeting is 10 a.m. Jan. 11, 2014, in the library. A Cherries and Chocolate fundraiser will be held at the library 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Kutztown Jazz Quartet will perform.

Throughout the months of October and November, Lower Macungie Library will feature the paintings of retired art teacher Kathy LaRose. She will be displaying a selection of oil and mixed media plein air paintings of local scenes.

The library will be closed Nov. 28 and 29 in observance of Thanksgiving.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Dec. 4.

There will be a Bedtime Booktime for children ages two through eight years 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2. Come in your pajamas to hear some bedtime stories.

Lower Macungie Library has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor to present a 12-week program of films, lectures and live music called, "America's Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway."

ArtsQuest has partnered with Lower Macungie Library to facilitate the events. The final presentation in the series will be a film and a Latin music and dance performance by the Hispanic American League of Artists 8 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Banana Factory. The event is free and open to the public.

Santa will visit the library 11 a.m. Dec. 7 bringing a little treat for all the boys and girls. Elf Erin will help Santa by reading a few stories. The event is for children ages two through 10; no registration is required.

Adult computer classes including Microsoft Word, Excel, Intro to the Web and social networking are offered monthly. The schedule is available at the library.

Class size is limited and sign-up is required for the above events.

Lower Macungie Township will accept volunteer applications until Dec. 2 for the following: audit advisory committee, building code board of appeals, environmental advisory council, planning commission, public safety commission, vacancy board and the zoning hearing board. Curbside leaf collection will continue through Nov. 29, weather permitting.

The fourth annual craft/vendor fair will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the community center.

There will be a Dale Cerino Memorial 5K Run and Fun Walk Dec. 7 at Lehigh Parkway West. Proceeds will benefit Dale's family. Online registration is available at www.pretzelcitysports.com.

The Lower Macungie Township Historical Society will hold Christmas at the Log House 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14. There will be an open house at the historic Bortz Log House at the Wescosville Recreation area on Route 222. The house will be decorated for Christmas in period fashion and lit by candles. Pat Taylor will demonstrate colonial style open hearth cooking. Warm spiced cider and cookies will be served. Both floors will be open for tours.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Dec. 3 and 17 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games. On Dec. 17, the games are followed by special entertainment.

Pickleball courts are now available at Rodale Park Tennis Court on Riverbend Road and at the township campus tennis court on Brookside Road. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines badminton, tennis and table tennis with a perforated plastic ball. Equipment is available to borrow at the community center.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center offers a number of activities including Walkercise, yoga, pilates and Zumba. Upcoming classes include art classes, Couch to 5K, self-defense and karate lessons for ages 13 and older. Fall children's programs include Kindermusik, painting and holiday art and craft classes. Adult and children's basketweaving classes are being offered in December. An SAT/ACT practice will be offered 9 a.m. Jan. 18, 2014. A safe sitter program will be offered 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 8, 2014.

Note: some classes are held at the Wescosville Recreation Center and the Hills at Lockridge Community Center.

There will be a Happy New Year Family Party 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 10, 2014 at the Lower Macungie Community Center. Activities will include a music countdown, vote for favorite songs and games. Registration is required.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The site is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
