Falcons fall to defending state champ

Salisbury got a tough draw for its opening-round PIAA Class AA playoff game.

The Falcons faced District 3 champ Pequea Valley, the defending state champ which had not allowed a goal through its 2013 district playoff run.

The Braves kept that scoreless streak alive as they beat the Falcons 2-0 last week at Hamburg High School.

"They were tough defensively," said Salisbury head coach Mark Allinson. "I thought we gave them a little bit of a scare on a couple of occasions. A bounce here or a bounce there. That's how it is at this level."

The Falcons (15-6-1) only allowed the Braves two shots on goal in the first half. The first came more than 37 minutes into the game. The second resulted in Victor Weaver's goal with just 39.5 seconds left before halftime.

Weaver made it 2-0 with 24:49 left in the game with an unassisted goal.

"They had two quick counterattacks," said Allinson. "One in the first half and one in the second half off of a goal kick that resulted in a second goal for [Weaver]. He was a thorn in our side. I was told he was going to be a thorn in our side and he proved it tonight."

Pequea Valley posted another shut out in the second round of states, beating Danville 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. The Braves moved two wins from another state title heading into Tuesday's semifinal round.

The Falcons finish off a successful season that saw them earn a District 11 silver medal. After slightly missing out on a league playoff berth in the highly-competitive Colonial League South Division, the Falcons won two district playoff games, including one against Colonial League champ and Class AA top seed Northwestern.

The loss to Pequea Valley wasn't easy to take, but the experience will be good for a young team that had just four seniors start the state playoff game.

"It stings in a good way in a sense that we got here through a lot of hard work and effort," said Allinson. "The kids certainly earned their way into [the state] tournament. It stinks that we have to go home, but the experience that we got, hopefully we'll be able to transform that next season."

The Falcons will have a large group of juniors from this year's team returning for their final season next year, including six starters.

This year's senior class has been part of four winning teams, including the 2009 district title team when the Falcons beat Southern Lehigh on penalty kicks for the Class AA title.

"Our seniors, they gave it their all for four years," said Allinson.

"I couldn't have asked any more of them as a group. They got up and down the field. They certainly were a good group of kids to work with.

"They were highly successful for four years. And they're going to continue to be successful throughout their lives."

This year's senior class includes goal keepers Shaun Holben and William Walsh, defenders AJ Foulke, Austin Uhl and Corey Meikrantz and midfielder Peter To.
